Hump Day Wild Card — 5.25.11

Sixty years ago today, my favorite baseball player took the field for the first time in a Major League uniform: Willie Mays (shown waving to the crowd during the 2010 World Series). I'm sure he would be the home run king -- steroid era or not -- if he hadn't lost 230 games to military service in 1952 and 1953 and hadn't played in the wind tunnel called Candlestick Park in San Francisco for most of his career. Willie's now 80 years old. As a kid, I saw Willie McCovey and him hit back-to-back first inning homers against the Houston Colt 45s decades ago. He's the principal reason I've been a Giants fan since age 8. You can talk about ballplayers you admire or use this Wild Card to start a thread on any topic ...
