Where Have All The Smiles Gone?

Eman: Just returned from another business trip and while I've noticed this before it was even more so to the front of my mind that, people don't smile much. I don't mean maniacal crazy person smile. I mean the gentle smile, the kind of smile one might give in passing to a parent with a new born. Most people have a scowl or pre scowl look. Mostly a look of feigned importance, I don't know. I catch myself doing it and that's when I ask myself, what am I afraid of that I have to have "that" look on my face? Is it just me or are people grumpy in a perpetual state of self defense? Sure there's a lot of reasons to be grumpy but really? There are lots or reasons to smile and the smile should be the go to and not the scowl right?

Question: Is Eman correct? Are people you encounter perpetually grumpy?
