Election Filing Begins Monday

Kootenai County Clerk Jim Brannon reminds people interested in running for fire district or municipal leadership roles in November that the filing deadline is 5PM September 4. “Numerous fire districts have Commissioner seats available, and candidates can file now,” said Brannon.  “Most cities have Council or Mayor positions available, and candidates can file starting August 24.” Potential candidates must contact their fire district or contact their city hall for residency requirementsFiling paperwork needs to be started and finalized at the fire district office or at city hall. Fire district candidates must gather signatures of registered voters on their candidacy petitions.  City candidates can pay a $40 fee in lieu of gathering signatures if they wish.  County Elections’ staff will verify voter signatures on candidacy petitions. “People interested in running for these offices need to take action by September 4 to ensure their names appear on the November 3 ballot,” Brannon emphasized.  “And since the filing process can be time-consuming, it’s best to begin early.” For further information, call the fire district or city hall whose phone numbers appear on your property tax notice, or phone Kootenai County Elections at 446-1030/Kootenai County Clerk's Office press release.
