Night driving the Columbia Gorge

Seems I'm not the only one who doesn't like to drive the Columbia Gorge at night. Responding to my Wild Card post re: my daughter and son-in-law driving from Portland to Coeur d'Alene tonight, Arpie posts: "I'm heading Portland way and will wave to them. ... The good news -- No passes. The bad news the Gorge, at night, in the rain, can be as bad as many passes. New rubber on the road and on the windshield should help!" The Gorge has been the source of some of my most harrowing driving. Even in the day, down pours in the Gorge can make driving treacherous. At night, in the dark spots between Hood River and the outskirts of Portland, driving is never fun. A few years ago, my wife's sister and her husband flipped their pickup on an icy patch in the Gorge. How about you?

Question: Do you have any harrowing tales re: driving along Highway 84 through the Columbia Gorge?
