The Slice

Hearing things

A Spokane nurse told me this story.

She was outside, working in the garden. She had left her Smartphone in the house.

Her husband, an older man who is not slavishly devoted to advances in personal technology, was inside.

A text arrived on her phone. And it made the familiar "ping" sound.

Then, after a bit, it happened again.

The man, described by his wife as spiritual but not especially mystical, listened. He started thinking.

After it happened once more he went outside and approached his wife.

This might sound crazy, he said, but I have to tell you something.

She listened and then gently told him that, no, he hadn't been visited by an angel.
