Good start in softball

What would a 4A softball season be without a post-season matchup between Shadle Park and University? The teams failed to connect in the district finals as had been the case the previous three years, but they'll play today, 10 a.m. in the eastern regional tournament semifinals.

Greater Spokane League softball teams nearly swept the first round of 4A regional play at Franklin Park Friday, reversing last year's outcome when only Shadle Park was victorious.

The Highlanders edged Moses Lake 1-0 and Titans scored three runs in the eighth inning for a 3-0 win over Walla Walla, avenging last year's tourney opening loss to the Blue Devils. Central Valley topped Pasco 5-4. Mead nearly made it a clean sweep, losing 1-0 to Columbia Basin champion Richland, a game scoreless until the sixth.

CV plays Richland in the other semifinal in the summer sun today. Mead faces Pasco at noon. Also at noon, Mt. Spokane plays Kamiakin in the 3A tourney at Franklin and North Central plays at 2. p.m.
