Newcomers shine in scrimmage

Back home and storied filed a while back on GU's Kraziness in the Kennel. For what it's worth, the Red Team, stocked with newcomers, beat the more veteran Blue 37-33 behind Kevin Pangos' 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting.

Here's a link to the article that will run in Sunday's S-R.

A couple of things that didn't make it in the article below.

--For obvious reasons, I'm hesitant to read much into a scrimmage. I went back and read my articles from the last two Kraziness scrimmages and even after doing that it didn't prompt one specific memory of the 2010 and 2009 events.

Still, a couple of things were obvious. Pangos not only scored 16 points, but he did it within the confines of the offense. When David Stockton left Pangos to try to make a steal, Pangos took a pass and drained a 3 in the first 30 seconds. He had three 3s in the first 3 minutes. Later, he took Stockton off the dribble for a layup and he also made a runner and a jumper after a pump-faked cleared space from Stockton.

He had 16 of the Red team's first 26 points. He didn't score in the final 5 minutes.

Stockton, meanwhile, didn't score until draining a 25-footer in the final seconds, his lone shot of the scrimmage.

--It sounds like the scrimmage was planned for 20 minutes, but shortened because the team practiced for 2 hours earlier Saturday. Elias Harris only played eight minutes because of a tender hamstring. However, after watching Harris it's evident he's in better shape (he's at 234 pounds after playing at around 245 a year ago). More on how he did it next week.

--Guy Landry Edi had a couple of nice stretches. The athletic 6-6 wing had basket in transition, a drive-and-dish to set up Dower's dunk and then drew a charge at the other end of the floor.

"I thought Guy looked good and he's going to help us in a variety of ways," head coach Mark Few said.

Landry Edi scored the Red's final six points, connecting on a 3 and three free throws in the final 60 seconds.

"I've definitely heard about it (the crowd) and I've seen it on TV," Landry Edi said. "But experiencing it with my teammates was a great experience. I've heard we have the best fans in the country and I agree with it."

By the way, I checked with Landry Edi and his first name is pronounced Gee, not Guy.

--Kelly Olynyk sat out with a concussion suffered earlier this week.

"I went to block a shot, someone pump-faked and I flipped over them and hit my head," he said. "I guess I stood up and sat back down, blacked out for a bit."

Olynyk is one of five GU bigs. My guess is the Zags will go with four if everybody remains healthy, meaning Olynyk or Spangler are the likely candidates to redshirt. Dower has already used his redshirt season.

"I haven’t really thought about it too much, I’m practicing like I'm going to play," he said. "When the time comes to make a decision, we'll make a decision. The (coaches) have been really good about it. We'll get together soon and see what they're thinking, what I'm thinking and what's best for the team."

--GU is ready to face somebody else (Carroll visits for an exhibion game next Friday) after the daily grind of practicing against each other.

"It's always good, especially for our big guys to be able to bang against other people," Few said. "It's hard for Rob, Sam to play against each other, Kelly, Spangs. It'll be nice for those guys to hit some other people."
