Receiving equal treatment

Trailblazers. Entrepreneurs. Pioneers. Don Poffenroth and Kent Fleischmann fit many descriptions, but as the enterprising founders of Washington state’s first post-Prohibition distillery, perhaps they deserve to create their own label.

Sequel aches for heroic save

Years ago, someone cracked about Harrison Ford: “With a hat, he’s a star. Without, he’s not.” I’m beginning to think another axiom may serve as a good rule of thumb for director Guillermo del Toro: With subtitles, he’s an artist. Without, he’s just a good genre filmmaker.

Take ‘Journey’ in 3-D to avoid dead end

“Journey to the Center of the Earth” is cinematic sci-fi proof that the Earth’s core is made of cheese. Mercifully, it’s old-fashioned, family-friendly B-movie cheese, served up in this Brendan Fraser/Jules Verne action epic for kids. Seek out this “Journey” in a theater showing it in 3-D. You’ll want the T-Rex, with his snapping teeth, the bio-luminescent birds, the gigantic Venus flytraps and that mouthwash Fraser spits down his sink all right in your face. Or lap.

Festival draws crowds to park

The last thing Lisa Summers expected to find Saturday at ArtFest was her daughters playing with smelly dead fish. "That's just nasty," Summers said, covering her mouth as 9-year-old Courtney Eastep poked the fish with her finger and then picked up the scaly body for a better look.

Creatures with character

Every year, millions of people can see Bill Sanders' realistic, life-size animal sculptures in Spokane. The most prominent are a nearly 12-foot-tall bull moose – with 6-foot-wide antlers – and a trio of timber wolves prowling the basalt water feature at Spokane International Airport's entrance. Then there's a grizzly bear guarding a Browne's Addition condo building, named for its mascot. A stately Percheron horse fills the front yard of a home on East 17th Street.

Young sneaker brigade ready for morning run at Albi

An 8:30 a.m. starting gun will spark the first of 10 waves of young runners who'll pack Joe Albi Stadium today for the 23rd America's Kids Run in Spokane. Spokane resident Mike Erwert, event director and founder, said about 2,800 youngsters, ages 5 through 12, are pre-registered for the race. Early morning sign up will also be offered, he said. Same day registrants should arrive an hour before race time.

Spokane man suspect in child porn ring

A Spokane man is one of a dozen suspects arrested as part of a "highly sophisticated and well-organized" nationwide ring that distributed child pornography on the Internet using encrypted files, the Justice Department announced Tuesday. Warren King Mumpower was arrested Friday by FBI agents who searched his home at 1429 E. Courtland and seized computer equipment, authorities said.

The Kinder-Pyle family

Sheryl and Scott Kinder-Pyle like adventures, especially those they're called to. As Sheryl sips tea and Scott drinks coffee, they share a pastry and talk about God and church and a move last year that took them all the way across the country.

Victorian’s secrets

Chris Bewick was tearing apart a ceiling in a second-story room of his South Hill Victorian when he heard an unexpected sound. "Crunching glass," he says. It was February and Chris, along with wife Staci and their two young boys, were nearing the halfway point of a major restoration of the old home they purchased in August 2001. Confused by the odd sound, Chris slowed the pace of demolition.

Mpire.com ties in with Craigslist

Last year we did a quick mention of innovative shopping search site Mpire.com. One thing we didn't mention was that the Seattle-based Mpire's site has a handy interface with Craigslist's for-sale listings. This means, drum roll, that from Mpire you can do a quick search of several Craigslist cities for any given item you want to buy. That's kinda neat. It's not so obvious that you'll see it on the main Mpire page. You have to first enter an item in the search box. Up come two tabs: new items and eBay auctions. Off to the right of the tabs will be a drop-down choice saying Craigslist (select a location). Say you want to buy a digital camera, the Canon S2. Plunk that in and search. Then drop down the menu and choose your city: The choices are arranged alphabetically and include all our regional centers, including Boise, Portland, Seattle and one just for Montana.

Art in motion

About an hour and a half south of Spokane, in the little town of St. John, rests a beckoning oasis on 20 acres of lush greenery, scattered wetlands, wooded groves and a glassy pond. But the silence is eerie, for these here are hunting grounds. The site is that of the Oasis Paintball Plantation, the endeavor of 24-year-old St. John native James Schierman and a few helping hands. The difference between this paintball field and other fields is that it is completely landscaped and strategically designed with sustainable products.

Fellows specialize in hype

If you talk to the three fine fellows of Three Fine Fellows (3F2) about the not-for-profit status of their events promotions business, they will likely tell you that status is a default. They'll gladly take a profit when they finally get one. If you ask, the three fellows will tell you that their passion and energy for action sports, wet and dry, is what pushes them to operate their Coeur d'Alene events promotion business in their spare time. If it were for the profit and glamour, they'll likely chuckle and tell you they're way off.

Learning to fly

The opening sequence of "Casino Royale," in true Bond fashion, is an intense chase scene, but this time the chase doesn't include any high-tech gadgets or mega-buck cars. It's just a couple of dudes running, jumping and pretty much getting themselves into situations that viewers assume have been digitally enhanced. But the two stuntmen they have running in the scene are two of the world's top participants in a sport called parkour.

Near rapids, near fun

There aren't any palm trees. No sandy beaches. But he still believes Spokane is a paradise. Well, at least for white-water river rafters. "My favorite is the Spokane River," said Paul Delaney, president of the Northwest Whitewater Association. "I love that this river is right in my back yard."

Reaching immortality

Everybody has heard the old "If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?" thing. Well, in this age of YouTube and digital photography, if a rider pulls off a huge move with style and a cocky grin without a camera around, did it really happen?

Notebook: Giants take double shot

Outfielder Fred Lewis and catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, two San Francisco players injured in Friday's wild game, were placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with injuries that could take significant time to heal. Lewis has a strained muscle in his right side and was headed for an MRI exam Saturday, while Alfonzo – injured in a collision at the plate with Oakland pinch-runner Donnie Murphy in the 10th inning to save a run – has a sprained ligament in his left knee that could require surgery and end his season.

Gerard and Willy Verkaik

Gerard and Willy Verkaik love open space. And while their children want the couple living close to family, the Verkaiks consider close a relative term. They recently bought a 40-acre property north of Loon Lake off Highway 395. The land is about 30 minutes from their daughter's Colbert home.
