‘Separate Lies’ brings control to eternally vexing question

The British are different from you and me. That might be the moral, such as it is, of "Separate Lies," a psycho-emotional thriller in which three members of the English upper class behave terribly well when they find themselves in a spot of trouble involving adultery, manslaughter and all manner of deviltry. In Hollywood's hands (think "Unfaithful"), this would feature steamy sex scenes, Oscar-worthy histrionics and at least one instance of someone avenging his honor with a gun.

311’s music is a consistent creative process

311 has pumped out eight studio albums since its inception in 1991. "We're never at a loss to have things to say and songs to write," bassist P-Nut said from Davis, Calif. "We're always interested in continuing the relationship."

A good support network draws her back

"I graduated high school in Buffalo, N.Y., and then the day after I graduated, my family moved to Spokane. My dad got called to serve as the dean of the Episcopal cathedral, St. John the Evangelist. And at that point, my mom was really ill, so I opted to take time off before going to college and just moved here with my family. "During that year that I spent here, I really didn't get to know the city at all. I just primarily took care of my mom who passed away that year. So I lived here for a year, and then I moved back east to go to school (at Brown University) in Providence, R.I., which is where I had originally intended to go to school. I went there for a couple of years and then left there on a medical leave and opted to come back to Spokane to regroup, because this is where my dad and my brother were.

A guide to top monster mashes

By the time Halloween gets here Monday you may find yourself needing a new costume if you have plans of getting your monster mash on this weekend. You don't want to be wearing a weekend's worth of sweat and cigarette smoke. Plenty of freaky festivities are happening over the next couple of days. Here are your seven best bets for this Halloween weekend in Spookane:

A King, and yet a prince

LOS ANGELES – The tour bus where B.B. King is sitting has parked right outside the artists' entrance so the walk to the stage will be short and painless. The venerated guitarist, singer and songwriter is balancing his lifelong yearning to get onstage against offstage life with diabetes. The illness has given him a latter-day second career as a spokesman for a glucose monitoring device, and he mentions those ads for comic relief once he's in front of an audience again.

A little of this, a sample of that

Mashups are tracks that combine samples of one familiar song with the recorded vocals from another, such as "Switchin' Alive," with Will Smith rapping "Switch" over the Bee Gees' "Staying Alive." The idea is to combine two musicians who have nothing to do with one another stylistically, in order to create something danceable and new: Vanilla Ice rapping "Ice Ice Baby" over Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight."

A little rain and some sun

Just like a weatherman who rains on your parade after predicting sunshine, "The Weather Man" offers a relentless, bittersweet drama instead of the expected comedy. The result isn't an out-and-out disaster; just a disappointment. Nicolas Cage stars as Chicago TV weatherman David Spritz, who seems on the verge of big things. The network's big-time morning show has sent him feelers about a job, and he's already a bit of a celebrity around town.

A multiplayer masterpiece

Now that we've seen the dark conclusion to the epic "Star Wars" films, a gaping wound in The Force remains that only can be filled by more adventures in that galaxy far, far away. Pandemic Studios has heard our plaintive cries and seeks to offer a soothing salve in the form of "Battlefront II," a title that gets us more excited the more we've gotten to see of it. As we played through the most recent version of the game, we explored a host of new features, including the drastically improved Galactic Conquest mode and finally learning some of the dark history between "Episode III" and "IV." And yes, we got to wield a saber as Yoda.

Computers deleting customer service more

Forget service with a smile, whatever happened to service with a human being? In the days when computers seem to be taking over the job market, one has to wonder, will people soon be an endangered species? At one Spokane pizza place, customers aren't allowed to order what they want without the computer's permission. My sister recently tried to order a "specialty" pizza for her and our niece over the phone. I emphasize the word specialty since apparently it was inconceivable to order a pepperoni pizza with a sauce other than tomato.

HARD-CORE ROCKING

Black March is a relatively new band in town, but its members are no strangers to the local scene. The band members – drummer Chris Barr, bassist Rick Eyre, guitarist Dave Brezinski, guitarist Jason Anderson and vocalist Eli Bickerton – were once all-ages scenesters who have become 20-something dads and day-jobbers.

I’m not a doctor, but I play one on DS

The Nintendo DS' mission of providing unique game experiences has been accomplished, thanks to innovative fare such as the electronic-pet game "Nintendogs," the surgeon sim "Trauma Center" and Capcom's over-the-top law drama "Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney." While we've extolled the virtues of "Nintendogs," here are the latest games: 'Trauma center'
