When a defining moment comes along, embrace it

Editor's Note: This column marks the debut of "All We Never Knew," about starting over and the lessons we learn along the way. One thing I learned in my 13 years of marriage is that it's a lot harder to say 'goodbye' than it is to say 'I do.'

A ‘Closer’ look

Jude Law and Julia Roberts and Clive Owen and Natalie Portman fall giddily in love in "Closer," but don't be fooled: This is the furthest thing possible from a date movie. These inordinately beautiful people end up doing extraordinarily ugly things to one another – Portman, all grown up and playing a stripper, commits some of her offenses in little more than a G-string – and the way they destroy each other and themselves is both brutal and breathtaking to watch.

Blustery Bening offers little in ‘Being Julia’

Being Annette Bening must be nice. While most of her contemporaries are lucky to land bit parts as eccentric spinsters and domestic martyrs, she gets the gift of a leading role, sprigged with prestige and conceived as a path to the Oscar podium. The actress plays the main character in "Being Julia," an adaptation of a W. Somerset Maugham novel about a West End grand dame who has a fling with a fan half her age. It's a showy part, to put it mildly, with grand gestures, big emotions and eye-catching costumes.

Dokken rocks back into the spotlight

Forget Reaganomics. Perestroika, schmerestroika. And don't even start with that boring Iran Contra scandal stuff. The real question the children of the '80s want answered goes much deeper than silly world-

Film proves Fellini ahead of his time

One of the key works of the modern cinema, Federico Fellini's 1961 film "La Dolce Vita" looks ever more prescient. A brilliantly conceived epic fable about a gossip columnist who thinks he still has higher aspirations, the film holds its age well. Centering on Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni), adrift in Rome's high life, "La Dolce Vita" introduced the term paparazzi into the vocabulary, and depicted, with a judicious mixture of satire and compassion, the world of celebrity, which has never been more avidly chronicled than right now

Get the lowdown on low-fat pizzas

Pizza is a big-time favorite of the Lunch Ladies. In fact, it was the first review we did, and since then, we've tried every new low-fat pizza to hit the market: Lean Cuisine's Crispy Crust, Michelina's Lean Gourmet and even Pizza Hut's Fit N' Delicious. Now it's time for another round because Lean Cuisine has come out with Deep Dish varieties, and there are a couple of others we wanted to try. Lean Cuisine

Clip 'n' save this handy holiday gift guide for secret Santas looking to send something more meaningful than lumps of coal to representatives elected, rejected, appointed and disappointed. A guide to funding essential services for Spokane Mayor Jim West: After the next round of brutal cutbacks, there might not be any libraries left to lend one out.

Music services changing to meet consumers’ downloading habits

The music industry is changing. Reluctantly. After spending the past several years confused and confounded by the proliferation of music online, both legal and otherwise, the Recording Industry Association of America and the labels have accepted that downloading is the future of music, and the future is now.

New reality program gets royal treatment

From the people who brought us "Anna Nicole Smith Unplugged" or, more precisely, "unglued," comes the new reality show "Love Is in the Heir," which premiered Sunday night on E! Let me see if I can explain this farce of a reality show fittingly. Princess Ann Claire Van Shaick Pahlavi (Princess Ann Claire for short) is a descendent of the last shah of Iran, which means big money. She has been chosen as the star of a new reality show because this real-life princess has a passion for, would you believe it, country music. I guess she wants to be the next Patsy Cline.

Wrap memories around your wrist with charm bracelets

Charm bracelets once served as jingle-jangle reminders to vote for John F. Kennedy. Passed out to constituents, they dangled photos, busts or the names of John and Jacqueline Kennedy and their children, according to the book "Charmed Bracelets" (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, $19.95). Another carried a scroll with Kennedy's call to "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

You, too, can pretend to be single online

Q: My husband of 10 years sees nothing wrong with joining date sites on the Internet to chat with other women. He portrays himself as single. He said he can talk with them about their problems, or discuss his own. Then he gives them his e-mail address and cell phone number. I'm not happy with this, but he said I'm just insecure. Do you think so? Steve: I think you should pull his plug. Chatting with women on the Net is OK, but pretending he's single and giving out his cell phone number is not. Ask him how he would feel if you gave out your phone number to other men. And tell him Steve said when a husband wants to discuss problems, he should start with his wife.

An epic failure

"All men reach and fall, reach and fall." So proclaims Ptolemy (Anthony Hopkins), pharaoh of Egypt, lieutenant to Alexander the Great, and Alexander's biographer in Oliver Stone's "Alexander."
