Going clubbing? Leave your gun at home

There have been a number of notable deaths in the music world this year – Ray Charles, Rick James, Johnny Ramone, J.J. Jackson, Jake Hess, Preston Love and Ol' Dirty Bastard. Among the most bizarre and tragic is sure to be Dimebag Darrell (Diamond Darrell to old schoolers, real name Darrell Abbott), 38. Unlike the aforementioned music heroes, the Pantera/Damageplan guitarist was murdered.

‘Meet the Fockers’

When you "Meet the Fockers," which you'll have the chance to do on Wednesday, you'll experience a clash between two families – one headed by former CIA operative Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro), the other featuring Jack's soon-to-be son-in-law Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) and his eccentric parents, Bernie and Roz (Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand). –Dan Webster, staff writer

‘Phoenix’ crashes and burns

"The Flight of the Phoenix" takes its title from a Greek myth about a bird that is reborn after death by fire, resurrected from its smoldering remains. Maybe the studio should try something similar with the film itself: burn the prints and hope a better movie rises out of the ashes.

Platonic affair titillates husband

Q: I'm a happily married man who's developed a platonic friendship with a young woman. I'm not sure how this happened, but over time she began confiding in me all of her romances, including her sexual experiences, in great detail.

Reality finales induce holi-daze

Somewhere in between the holiday party madness, the eggnog-hazed tree trimming and syndicated Christmas movie marathons, I managed to collapse on my couch for some much needed R&R and RTV (aka reality TV). Turns out that not only is the holiday season in full swing, but so is the season of reality show finales. It goes without saying that "Survivor" (CBS) has lost its edge during the past few years and the final episode was not as anticipated as it had been previously. I remember practically writing down the competitors' scathing final words so that I'd have something to talk about with co-workers the next day.

Season of giving puts life in perspective

I drove to the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center last week to sample how the Christmas Bureau works and experience the atmosphere that fills the huge ag show building for two weeks each Christmas season. Money never came easily in my working-class family. In the 16th century, we were poor English farmers. My great-great grandfather later moved to the United States and started a generation of poor Midwestern farmers.

‘Spanglish’ gets a little lost in comedy-drama translation

James L. Brooks' "Spanglish" is a cross-cultural comedy-drama about the ripples in a dysfunctional upper-class Los Angeles family when a conscientious and caring Hispanic maid enters the scene. Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni are the husband and wife, but newcomer Paz Vega steals the film as Flor, an illegal alien from Mexico whom they hire to watch their kids and clean their house.

Bluntly put, ‘Blade’ is pointless

In film number three, "Blade" has grown a little dull. "Blade: Trinity" is the latest chapter in the popular ongoing film series about the Marvel Comics hero whose life's mission is the destruction of all vampires.

Don’t let age get in the way of romance

Q: I am a 45-year-old bachelor who looks 36. When I meet younger women, they appear to be interested in me. The last situation happened with a 24-year-old woman. Over a period of five or six weeks, she developed a high interest in me, but I did nothing because of the age gap. Is an age difference a BIG problem, or is it acceptable – like in the movie "The Terminal"? Also, how long can a woman's interest last for a guy she likes? Could it be a year or longer, or is it just until the next guy comes along? Mia: Hey, if you're lucky enough to attract younger chicks, go for it! Old people are fond of saying, "Age ain't nothing but a number," aren't they? But I will say of 24-year-old women, the attention span isn't always great. So, if she was into it a year ago, she's probably moved on by now.

Extreme lumberjacking gets our vote

What it is: The Outdoor Life Network (OLN) is perhaps best known for its hunting and fishing shows, such as "Buckmasters," "Beretta's Bird Hunter's Journal" and "Lindner's Angling Edge." But for outdoor sports of a different nature, I tune in to "Lumberjack World Championships," a series that showcases hardy men – and women – going head-to-head in competitions ranging from the underhand block chop to single buck sawing to the ever- popular log-rolling face-off. What it's all about: Competitors from Canada, the northern United States and other tree-filled spots around the world come together to take turns sawing logs and climbing 80-foot-tall cedar poles for fame and fortune – or at least the modest glory that comes with being named the world champion standing block chopper. Events are varied, but most require proficiency with an ax or a long bucking saw – except, of course, those water-based battles that quickly disprove the notion that nothing could be easier than falling off a log.

And all have grins galore for children and adults, for casual gamers and hard-to-please hobbyists.

gift OF giving the

SPARE the guilt trip. No one wants to listen to another you-owe-them diatribe about the crime of fortune, the sin of hard-earned comforts. That's a false, sleight-of-hand way to drive people to charity. Poverty is no stranger and less of a surprise – folks avoid its gaze on the walk to work, the fact that it sleeps in the backseat of the car down the street, that it waits with palm upturned on the way out of the mall.

Reality version of ‘Gilligan’s Island’ almost as good as fiction

Not every television sitcom could easily be transformed into a reality show. It just doesn't work. Even though elements of shows such as "The Cosby Show" and "Seinfeld" seemed so lifelike, they were completely scripted and relied heavily on the genius minds of the creators. That is why I was hesitant to watch one network's attempts to bring a 1970s classic sitcom into the reality realm – it just did not seem plausible. "The Real Gilligan's Island" premiered on Nov. 30 on TBS. On the new "Island," two teams of castaways – that's right, two Mary Anns, two Professors, two chubby Skippers, and so on – dress up as their favorite characters to compete for a grand prize. Not only do these teams resemble the cast of the original show, they actually are the characters; real-life millionaires and farm girls were chosen to participate, and two B-actresses, Nicole Eggert and Rachel Hunter, will fill Ginger's shoes. That's an interesting twist!
