Charity work is their family’s holiday gift

Some families play board games together during the holidays. Jennifer Boyle's family is a little different – instead of working with wooden Scrabble tiles, they work with people and charities in the community. Boyle, a freshman at Eastern Washington University, has been home for winter break since December 6, staying with her mother and two younger siblings on Spokane's North Side.

Holidays leave us lots to like

There are so many things to love about the holiday season: time spent with family, hot buttered rum and, of course, loads of presents. As we were counting our seasonal blessings, it occurred to us that many of the things we hold particularly dear during the holidays are – for whatever reason – only things that we indulge in at this time of year. We've made a list (the copy editor checked it twice), and present to you our seasonal roundup of What We Like: Extreme Holiday Edition.

Leaving old life brings more loss

It was hard to ignore her sobs on the phone. More than a hundred of us were on a full flight ready to take off. Even if you were trying not to listen, you couldn't help it. Strangers heard this: "What bad news? No, just tell me now. Is he OK? Don't tell me he died while I was gone … oh my God … when did he die?" followed by the first set of tears – the achy sounding ones, interrupted with gasps of air, and panicky breathing. Poor girl was trying so hard to hold them in, too. All the people who could get a clear look at the caller turned to look – across the aisle, in front and behind her. There was no privacy for this girl who obviously just got the bad news that someone close to her had died. Now she was dealing with everyone staring at her too, and a three-hour flight to follow. But her next comment got much more of a reaction, with stirs and a few audible gasps when she asked, "You put him in the freezer?"

Reality TV takes no holidays

As could be expected, the final episode of "Apprentice 2" (NBC) last week was completely drawn out and somewhat ridiculous, but being an avid fan of this show, I had to watch every last cheesy moment to see who won. Reminiscent of last season, the boardroom facade was pulled away during the last hour of the show, and the program went live to Lincoln Center in New York City. Trump supposedly had not made up his mind yet, so, with some help from guest host Regis Philbin, he reached out to the cheering audience to find out who they were rooting for.

Recounting those who set aside self-interest

Before I hang my stocking on the hearth – with energy prices so high, all that coal will come in handy – it's time to single out the real winners in the Washington governor's race recount: folks who acted against their own best interest to do the right thing. I was particularly struck by Chantelle Weaver, a Dino Rossi supporter from South Seattle. Her ballot was among those King County elections workers mistakenly set aside during the initial tally instead of them being checked against signatures on file.

Scorsese may get overdue Oscar

If your image of Howard Hughes is tainted by the memory of the aged, longhaired weirdo, hiding from germs in a Las Vegas hotel, Martin Scorsese offers up a fascinating reminder that Hughes achieved far more than eccentricity. To be sure, even the young Hughes (well played by Leonardo DiCaprio) was a strange fellow, eating only steak and peas at every meal, and washing his hands compulsively to avoid infections. But before the famous neuroses destroyed his public life, Hughes made history on at least two fronts – in the air and in Hollywood.

Apartment life strains sanity

It's hard to know what to take and leave behind when you start all over. My girlfriends told me to take everything I could from our three-bedroom, two-bath mortgage. But I didn't really want any of our old stuff, so I took the necessities: the TV/VCR combo, a bed, the clothes that currently fit me and, of course, my dog Sammy. Left behind was my husband of 13 years and my 19-year-old cat The Babe, my first furry child. Leaving my cat behind broke my heart.

Bands join forces for the little ones

For the fifth consecutive year, local alternative band Vertigo Bliss is ready to Rock for Tots. The event, founded and organized in 2000 by Vertigo Bliss lead singer/guitarist Dave Kotlan, has collected thousands of toys for area children, with all of the toy donations and proceeds going to Toys for Tots.

Classic cartoons stage a comeback on Boomerang

What it is: Boomerang, an offshoot of cable and satellite TV's popular Cartoon Network, packs its daily schedule with 24 hours of the classic cartoons that Gen X-ers grew up watching. What it's all about: You won't find the "Powerpuff Girls," "Yu-Gi-Oh!" or "SpongeBob SquarePants" clowning around on Boomerang. The all-classics, all-the-time channel instead devotes its bandwidth to such cartoon stalwarts as Tom & Jerry, Popeye and the SuperFriends. In addition to liberal helpings of favorites from the Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera corrals (showcasing such beloved icons as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound and Quick Draw McGraw), there are rebroadcasts of such once-seminal shows as "The Flintstones," "The Jetsons" and, yes, even "The Smurfs." And if you've been wracking your brain trying to remember key plot points of such gone-but-not-entirely-forgotten series as "Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch" or "Valley of the Dinosaurs," you can relax: Boomerang has 'em.

Film’s critical success may result in box office failure

Some movies need all the publicity they can get. Take "Alexander," for example. Oliver Stone's three-hour-long study of the legendary Macedonian conqueror may be to history what Pete Rose is to ethics. At the same time, it has fewer bloodbaths than your average episode of "South Park" ("They killed Kenny!").

Going clubbing? Leave your gun at home

There have been a number of notable deaths in the music world this year – Ray Charles, Rick James, Johnny Ramone, J.J. Jackson, Jake Hess, Preston Love and Ol' Dirty Bastard. Among the most bizarre and tragic is sure to be Dimebag Darrell (Diamond Darrell to old schoolers, real name Darrell Abbott), 38. Unlike the aforementioned music heroes, the Pantera/Damageplan guitarist was murdered.

‘Meet the Fockers’

When you "Meet the Fockers," which you'll have the chance to do on Wednesday, you'll experience a clash between two families – one headed by former CIA operative Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro), the other featuring Jack's soon-to-be son-in-law Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) and his eccentric parents, Bernie and Roz (Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand). –Dan Webster, staff writer

‘Phoenix’ crashes and burns

"The Flight of the Phoenix" takes its title from a Greek myth about a bird that is reborn after death by fire, resurrected from its smoldering remains. Maybe the studio should try something similar with the film itself: burn the prints and hope a better movie rises out of the ashes.

Platonic affair titillates husband

Q: I'm a happily married man who's developed a platonic friendship with a young woman. I'm not sure how this happened, but over time she began confiding in me all of her romances, including her sexual experiences, in great detail.
