We’re on a highway to Hell

I was watching TV and eating barbecued ribs in my Evanston, Ill., living room when live shots started rolling in from Jeffrey Dahmer's apartment building 75 miles to the north in Milwaukee, Wisc. I lost my appetite when the reporter commented on the large stew pot police were carting out. But I would have lost my lunch if Milwaukee officials had announced they were selling Dahmer's cookware to help pay for their investigation. A similar queasy feeling hit me when I heard Spokane County plans to auction two vehicles used by serial killer Robert Yates in the commission of his heinous crimes.

‘Yes Men’ parody pokes painful fun

The first two people to appear on camera in "The Yes Men" are Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno, two guys you've probably never heard of, but whose anti-globalization- activist-cum- performance-art antics are chronicled in this pungent little documentary by Dan Ollman, Sarah Price and Chris Smith.

21 hard truths about the 2004 election

A deadlocked governor's race just isn't as exciting as a contested presidential election. In one, you worry about who will become the leader of the free world. In the other, you wonder who's going to control road-improvement projects in Puyallup. A drawn-out contest between Dino Rossi and Christine Gregoire plays right into the hands of 2008 dark-horse candidate Mike the Mover.

Alibi can be lullaby to those in need

When Sara King wanted out of a blind date arranged by her family, she knew she needed a believable reason. Something like "I got lost" or "I'm coming down with the flu" probably would have worked just fine.

Cartoonist Adams finally gives Dilbert a home of his own

It turns out Dilbert doesn't live in a cubicle. Cartoonist Scott Adams' bespectacled engineer is something of an icon for workers everywhere. And after years of skewering life at the office, Adams is taking on the somewhat mindless, cookie-cutter nature of our homes.

Depp deserves buzz

Sitting there, lighting a cigarette with studied casualness, Johnny Depp looked like the essence of movie-star cool. This was in 1993, and we were in some backstage screening room near the old MGM complex in Culver City. Depp, who was then just 29, wasn't that far removed from his "21 Jump Street" days in which he played a narc.

hot film

A young boy (voice by "Spy Kids" star Daryl Sabara) takes a train ride to the North Pole and, with the help of a friendly conductor (voice by Tom Hanks), rediscovers his faith in the magic of Christmas. Robert Zemeckis ("Forrest Gump") directs from the classic children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. Sneak preview 4 p.m. Saturday at NorthTown Mall Cinemas; opens nationwide Wednesday. – Dan Webster, staff writer

Keith’s country smashes to hit Spokane Arena

Wow, for a second there, we almost forgot about Toby Keith. After all, the television airwaves have been bogged down with an endless supply of annoying political attack ads. So it is conceivable a person could miss one of Keith's Ford truck-lovin' tough guy commercials, which currently run about a dozen times an hour on every channel.

Neto brings jazz of Brazil to The Met

Jovino Santos Neto's smooth blend of jazz, classical and indigenous Brazilian music is leading the way for avant-garde Brazilian jazz artists in the United States. Since moving to Seattle more than a decade ago, the Rio de Janeiro-born pianist/keyboardist/

Saving the day

Just when you thought computer-animated extravaganzas had devolved into little more than a litany of played-out pop culture references and some swaths of bright color comes "The Incredibles," a smart, sophisticated, much-needed reminder – after "Shark Tale" – of the best the genre can be. The story of a family of superheroes trying to live a normal, suburban life undoubtedly will call to mind the "Spy Kids" trilogy, and the film's futuristic, mid-century design aesthetic is an homage to James Bond. But the latest release from Pixar Animation ("Finding Nemo," the "Toy Story" movies) has a brain, a heart and – best of all – a strong script beneath the striking visuals.

Should matchmakers take blame for baby?

Q: I recently introduced a single male friend to one of my girl- friend's single female friends. The two of them fell in love, but eventually stopped seeing each other. Then the woman found out that she was pregnant. Now she's putting the blame on me and my girl for hooking them up, and she won't speak to us because she will have to raise the baby alone. Is this our fault?

Virtual heartbreak hotel gives you space to grieve

What it is: If you've ever dumped a nogoodnik or have been dumped by one, then you can surely commiserate with the recently unattached folks at Breakupnews.com. The site, penned by a New York City-based wedding announcement writer (oh, the irony!) and a Los Angeles screenwriter, chronicles the romantic disentanglements of readers who submit the gory details of their failed relationships, which are then written up, wedding announcement- style, and published for all to enjoy. What it's all about: The site's raison d'etre, of course, is its treasure trove of breakup tales, all recounted with a healthy dose of impudence. Mixed among the done-me-wrong sagas of John and Jane Q. Public are a few paeans to the breakups of the rich and famous, such as this excerpt: "Morning show mega-millionaire Katie Couric, 47, and her boyfriend of four years, 54-year-old Red Sox co-owner Tom Werner, are severing romantic ties, according to the People Magazine we found at our dentist's office."
