Sometimes I feel I’ve got to TAKE

SOMETIMES, reality is a bitch, you know? Say your day goes like this: First, you sleep through your alarm. Then you cut yourself while shaving (your face, leg, whatever). Your gas tank is dangerously low, but you don't have time to stop. So you coast to work on fumes and then can't find a spot to park. You end up on the street, stuffing odd coins in a meter. Then the day progresses: Your boss reminds you to put a cover sheet on your TPS report (see "Office Space," 1999 and page 22), you eat a Snickers bar for lunch, you doze through the afternoon and just as you're getting ready to leave, your boss gives you a project that has to be in by tomorrow morning.

Step back, Mac, time for blackjack

What it is: Blackjack is a card game that dates back to 1700s France, where it was typically called "Vingt-et-un" (French for "21"). What it's all about: You know the basic rules – players compete with the dealer to get cards that add up to (or as close as possible to) 21 without going over. A hand made up of an ace of any suit plus a 10 of any kind (including face cards) is an automatic 21, or blackjack, and unless the dealer can match that hand, the player wins more than he bet.

Story smolders in ‘Ladder 49’

After watching "Ladder 49," you will never complain about moving to the side of the road to make room for a fire truck. The new movie is the most polished of recruiting films. But that doesn't mean it's an outstanding movie. In the post-9-11 world, firefighters deserve our salutes more than ever, but noble sentiments do not necessarily make top-flight movies.

‘Survivor’ cast faces lightning-fast elimination

While I'm not usually a fan of the show "Survivor" (Thursdays, CBS), having been plagued with horrible images of previous casts eating rats and snakes for survival, I thought I'd give "Vanuatu" at least one shot to impress me. As usual, the cast is gorgeous. Where do they find these people? On page 50 of an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog? My favorite: Brady Finta.

7UP Plus packs a nice fruit punch

What it is: The latest entry into the (un)cola wars might seem at first glance to be yet another way for soda manufacturers to jump on the low-carb bandwagon. Like the newest offerings from Coca-Cola (C2) and Pepsi (Pepsi Edge), 7UP Plus has fewer calories and carbohydrates than its regular incarnation, though more than the carb-free, calorie-free diet version. But what sets 7UP Plus apart are a few things not regularly found in carbonated soft drinks: fruit juice, calcium and vitamin C. Oh, yeah and it's pink. What it's all about: Think of this as a kinder, gentler soda. Made with 5.percent apple juice and boasting a not-insignificant 15 percent of the recommended daily allowance of calcium and vitamin C, berry-flavored 7UP Plus is a (slightly) healthier way to indulge in a bubbly, pop-tastic treat. Like 7UP's regular and diet varieties, it contains no caffeine or artificial colors or flavors (the pink hue and "mixed berry" taste come from unnamed natural fruit and vegetable juices). Unlike its elder brethren, it's sweetened with Splenda (a no-calorie, sugar-based sweetener) rather than high fructose corn syrup or aspartame. And, most notable to those of us who have jumped on the diet-drink bandwagon, there are just a scant 10 calories (and 3 grams of carbs) in each 12 ounce can.

Ads unfairly twist the scalpel

Employing demagoguery out of desperation, Rep. George Nethercutt's new TV ad on medical liability reform barrels across the line of acceptable political discourse. In the spot, several Washington doctors attack Sen. Patty Murray as an opponent of reform. Dr. Shannon Casidy, a Covington OB/GYN, charges, "She's going to cost patients – potentially even cost them their lives." It's breathtaking that Nethercutt's campaign would associate itself with a statement that manages to be both lower than low and incredibly over the top at the same time. However, the current intense focus on health care in the U.S. Senate and governor's races is welcome. It's an issue as critical as an ICU patient and as serious as the heart attack that put him there.

Check out Brit band Gomez

Gomez's "The Ballad of Nice and Easy" originally was written with just acoustic guitar and percussion. But once it was received by drummer Olly Peacock, he took multi-instrumentalist Tom Gray's mellow-meant tune and jacked up the tempo; co-vocalist/guitarist Ian Ball covered it with an aggressive bass line; true vocalist/guitarist Ben Ottewell added a little electric gruff; and by the time the Brit-pop-alt-country-blues- rock quintet finished recording the closer to 2002's "In Our Gun," there was not a single acoustic track on "The Ballad …"

Finally, a must-see zombie flick

The phrase "zombie movie" typically provokes two opposite responses – either "zombie movie, cool, I can't wait to see it" or "zombie movie, ugh, you couldn't pay me to see it." "Shaun of the Dead," a British import, may be just the film to bridge those two poles because it isn't just a great zombie movie, it's a great movie that happens to have zombies in it.

‘First Daughter’ better left unseen

Born into privilege, raised in the fishbowl of American politics, and currently domiciled in that velvet prison known as the White House, Samantha Mackenzie is a first daughter who just doesn't know how to have fun. And neither does "First Daughter." Released after the similar "Chasing Liberty" and crammed full of threadbare fairy-tale imagery, this new 'tween comedy-romance feels very tired and very old.

Girlfriends make handbags with attitude

Leather, chains, whips. Handbags have come a long way, baby. Last year, business pals Karrie Johnson, 35, and Tarah Smith, 24, put their heads together and came up with edgy handbags that shouted for attention and touted attitude.

Hip-hop rogue Locke makes no apologies

In the local hip-hop scene, emcee Locke gets a lot of crap for being the hip-hop guy who doesn't know his hip-hop roots. Locke, aka Andrew Walters, is that dude at the party who gets dissed for not knowing that classic Erick Sermon album.

Know your voting rights before hitting the polls

If you voted in the last presidential election, perhaps you remember the feeling that your vote actually mattered. Even if you didn't – perhaps you were a little too young or too disinterested to cast your ballot in 2000 – surely the razor-thin margin of victory for George W. Bush over then Vice President Al Gore was just enough proof to finally dispel that tiny, cynical voice in your head that often pondered, "Does my vote actually count?"

Moore questions sanity in ‘The Forgotten’

Julianne Moore stars in "The Forgotten" as a mother who insists she remembers a now-deceased child, even when the world insists she never had one. That's the hook for this fast-paced thriller that blends a tribute to maternal love with psychological twists and more. "The Forgotten" offers a few parallels to the paranoia that ran through '50s sci-fi horror flicks such as "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers." Moments may also remind filmgoers of the darkly psychological elements in the M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense") film canon.

Oh no you did not dis reality TV!

I checked out Sunday's Emmy show on ABC to see if any of my "babies" received an award, and to my dismay, host Gary Shandling and a number of the presenters were mocking reality television and using popular shows such as "The Apprentice" as punch lines for all of their jokes. How rude. I guess Hollywood does not share my love of reality television. However, they were kind enough to present an award to CBS' reality show "Amazing Race" and included a reality television spoof in the broadcast.

Rockers put style into every show

While it seems like hip-hop bands with live instruments are becoming more commonplace, there is something out of the ordinary about southern California's Crown City Rockers. Of course, their sound falls in with college radio-ready organic art-hop similar to The Roots, Black Eyed Peas, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.
