Party over principle

The real reason for Mitch McConnell to block a bill on ensuring national election security is that he thinks Russia is going to help him and other GOPers at election time. What a patriot.

Protect Browne’s Addition

Browne's Addition is seeking a choice. Yes, a choice. It's disheartening to see developers come in and build inappropriate and unflattering buildings that disrupt the historic integrity of the neighborhood. Why would they want to do that? Don't they want to be proud of the growth and development of a beautiful place like Browne's Addition?

We’ll miss you, Bud

With Bud Nameck retiring as program director for KXLY radio, I wanted to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for his three decades of service to our community.

What ‘cool buses’?

I have been interested in this for a few years, since attending a meeting with Al French and STA CEO Susan Meyer. At that point they had not run buses on the planned Central City Line route and yet they projected high ridership. My question was - based on what? Have they ever tested this route for ridership?

Addressing inequity in SV

This letter is written in response to: "Spokane Valley leaders clash over racial equity proposal at Tuesday council meeting" (July 24).

Denigrating heroes

Dallas Garrison ("Trump good to the military," July 20) stated that he spent 20 years in the USAF. He goes on to say that President Trump has been good to him due to the fact that he received higher pension raises under Trump as compared to Obama. He certainly deserves the pension.

Diversity benefits everyone

The letter sent by twenty-eight legislators to BSU President Marlene Tromp states, "This drive to create a diversified and inclusive culture becomes divisive and exclusionary because it separates and segregates students."

Guild endorsement problematic

Mayoral candidates should neither seek nor accept the endorsement of the Police Guild. The city and the powerful police union have a sometimes adversary relationship. The city is in fact in negotiations with the police union over employment conditions from salaries to civilian oversight.

Haynes a true servant-leader

It is vital that the members of City Council represent the dynamic needs of our great city, and I believe Jerrall Haynes is the candidate best equipped to do just that for the northeast district.

Haynes: integrity, purpose, vision

I have worked with youth, specifically those who are marginalized or at risk, for a total of seven years. Throughout that time, I have had the honor of working with many dedicated educators and community members. The common trait amongst the greatest of them is integrity. Jerrall Haynes is a standout in that group.

I-90 solutions

When it comes to public transportation and the congestion on I-90, I personally would like to see a solution for those traveling the long distance from Spokane/Post Falls/Coeur d'Alene and making no stops in between. A "through lane" for instance, that has two or three on/off ramps on the west end (Spokane) and three to four off/on ramps on the east end (Post Fall/Coeur d'Alene). That way those travelers can avoid the stop-and-go traffic caused by the multiple on/off ramps.

Leave it in the ground

I was in the Alaska Arctic last month. It was amazing to see a landscape full of birds nesting and caribou with calves and predators, all thriving because of the vast undeveloped landscape. It was also depressing to be there.

Nadine’s donors problematic

This weekend, a peculiar pamphlet appeared in my door. "Spokane is thriving," it touted, "BUT radical politicians want to turn Spokane into Seattle!" A picture of Republican Nadine Woodward sat on the back, beneath the slogan (stolen from Stuckart) "A Mayor For All of Spokane." At the bottom read "Paid for by the Spokane Good Government Alliance." Its donors? Construction companies, developers, and real estate tycoons.

Respect the uniform

After seeing the assault on the NYPD officers with buckets and water and their reaction I was sick and embarrassed. They should have called for backup and then arrested the guilty parties. Walking away drenched was a disgrace to the uniform.

Stuckart is best for Spokane

Ben Stuckart is a colleague, mentor and friend. I have worked with him for almost eight years and have found his leadership to be nothing but insightful and forward-thinking, with the best intentions for the future of Spokane at heart. His policies have a clear vision for where the city should go in order to have a sustainable future.

Support police accountability

As the former chair of Spokane City Council Public Safety Committee, I was very disturbed to hear of Republican mayoral candidate Nadine Woodward's endorsement by the Police Guild and her comments dismissing the police ombudsman. Ben Stuckart is the only candidate for mayor who has taken hard votes to add more money and staff to the Police Department and uphold strong police accountability. This makes him the best choice for mayor.
