Armed citizens

Who would you rather have as a neighbor: an unarmed elderly person or an armed veteran who would put his life on the line for you as he has done so many times before?

Crapo doesn’t get it

On Aug. 5 I drove to unincorporated Cataldo, Idaho (pop. 100) to attend Idaho Republican Sen. Mike Crapo's town hall meeting. It is very obvious he's afraid to hold his meetings in more populous Coeur d'Alene (pop. 44,000) or Moscow (pop. 30,000) because he would likely get negative feedback from citizens in those communities. He apparently selected Cataldo because he thought it was deep in redneck country. However, he couldn't have been more wrong because the 12-15 people who attended were angry and loaded for bear.

Doing nothing – again

I thought after Sandy Hook that surely that tragedy would be terrible enough to move Congress to pass some meaningful gun reform. But nothing was done.

Ignoring the cause

This writer has become totally bamboozled by all the egregious rhetoric coming from the left pertaining to the two recent mass shootings. Everyone is playing the blame game, but never looking for the root cause.

Limes and no enforcement

I try to avoid going downtown but I had to do so twice last week. There were Lime scooters everywhere except where they should be. They're supposed to be in the bike lanes, but I never saw any in those lanes. All were flying down sidewalks. I never saw a single helmet.

Missing in action

Senators Risch and Crapo have abandoned me, as well as the Constitution and moral principles in general. I hear no protest from them at repeated racist rhetoric from the president. No condemnation of policies that separate small children from their families, not a word about damaging tariffs applied by a president in a fit of pique. It appears that the festering infection emanating from the White House has enveloped both senators in a tide of corruption and duplicity.

No need to worry

The solution to election hacking is simple. Go back to same-day voting and paper ballots, plus require valid photo I.D.

No U.S. leadership

Once again mass murder stalks our society. Finally, President Trump condemns the violence being perpetrated by white supremacists and other racists. The big question is, will he follow up on these statements and proposals or will he again revert to the real estate developer who manages instead of being the leader of the greatest country on the planet?

Other people’s money

Watching Sean Hannity interview presidential candidate Mayor Bill de Blasio and wondering why he and the other Democratic candidates will not answer what the results will be when, as de Blasio says, "tax the hell out of the rich and the corporations."

Regulation and responsibility

The Second Amendment limits gun ownership to those who are part of a "well-regulated militia." The NRA states that gun owners are required to be responsible for what their guns do.

We’re on that list

Donald Trump talks about s***thole countries. I would say any country that cannot protect its citizens from mayhem in schools, places of worship, movie theaters, shopping malls and even Walmart qualifies as a s***thole country. USA, welcome to the list!

Words matter

Every Marc Thiessen commentary seems to start with "It would have been better if Trump had not said it the way that he did, but ..."

Just be civil

The obsession with "PC culture" seems to come from those who enjoy slandering others and who wear their biases and prejudice like a badge of honor.

Racist roots affect today

I want to thank The Spokesman-Review editors for reprinting the Baltimore Sun's editorial regarding Trump's disparaging and racist tweets about Rep. Elijah Cummings and Baltimore ("Better to have a few rats than to be one," July 30).

Thank you, Cathy

When our local schools go into lockdown, my anxiety shoots sky high. I can't even imagine what it feels like for a parent living in a conflict zone. They must feel this anxiety every day as their children head off to school.

A more representative House

Our U.S. representatives are a disgrace! Observing bits of the Mueller hearings reminded me of a piece I wrote in my website newsletter in January 2010. Here's what I said then and believe it more strongly today:

Bridge to nowhere

I live in Lincoln Heights and bicycle all over the city. I was thrilled when the University District Gateway Bridge finally opened. For me it was a straight shot down Sherman, across Sprague and over the bridge. This improved and greatly expanded my bicycle route options.

Speak up, Republicans

I am so tired of people who say they won't speak against the tweets and tirades of this president because they like his policies.

A matter of respect

When it comes to political correctness, John Kittel hopes "we can return to some sense of respect and normality," ("Save us from PC," July 29).
