CMR’s poor performance

I hope the voting public and The Spokesman-Review were paying attention to the town hall meeting Cathy McMorris Rodgers held at Gonzaga University. Her responses to important questions were woefully inadequate, especially from a leader of the Republican Party.

Mueller disaster

After taking in the Mueller hearing in late July I can see that the Democrats are just plain desperate to impeach Trump – they would stop at nothing.

Protect the most vulnerable

In Spokane we have a refugee population of over 10,000 people who have fled their homes in search of a better life. As a student at Eastern Washington University, I share discussions with classmates who are former refugees. Learning from these students has enriched my learning experience; there's nothing more instructive than understanding the situation in Syria or Sudan from those who experienced it firsthand.

School supply scam

Being experienced with food and clothing banks for the needy, I need to give advice to generous folks (including businesses) thinking about donating money and/or school supplies to children before fall classes begin.

The real killer

No, Mr. President, I have it on good authority that Jeffrey Epstein was done in by Bigfoot, who I am certain is in the country illegally.

Valley council curtails speech

Spokane Valley Mayor Rod Higgins misused the prohibition on Campaigning in Government facilities to squelch a person's right to free speech during public comment during the Aug. 13, meeting. This is not his first time.

Why not a firefighting fleet?

I have no argument with the measures what is proposed by Sam Joseph, Julie Oliver, and Bob Lutz in "Take steps to protect yourself from wildfire smoke," (July 14), but, being 75, I chose to take it a step further and began to several months ago.

Gabbard best as commander in chief

It took us almost 150 years after the Civil War to elect a black president, twice. Then we decided we had gone too far to the extreme. In order to balance ourselves, we needed to go to the other extreme.

Hope for Alzheimer’s

I am disheartened to learn that only 1% of Medicare beneficiaries with dementia have received a personal care plan that has been available to them since 2017. It's my understanding that many physicians are unaware of this service that can help their patients and the patient's caregivers.

Politicization of a church

What happens when a church becomes politicized is revealed in the July 27 letter to the editor, "A moral obligation to asylum seekers," signed by 18 Christian congregants who felt compelled to reveal the name of their church - First Presbyterian Church (FPC), of which I am also a member. Nothing substantive was gained by naming the church except to advance the immigration narrative currently nurtured by a self-acknowledged "politically progressive" pastor. The letter requires rebuttal.

Firefighting double standard

Isn't it interesting that only nine months ago, Trump's response to California's Woolsey/Camp fires that killed at least 85 persons was that California should have better land management, not an offer of fire fighting assistance, yet this week, as Russia currently has fires in Siberia, he has offered to send American firefighters to help out, and to my knowledge without any request for aid.

Make Spokane Great Again?

"Woodward tops mayoral vote" in the Aug. 7 paper gave me a chill when I noticed an eerie similarity between Woodward and Trump.

I am a teacher. Every single teacher knows that bullies start the fights, call the names and denigrate anyone or anything "different."

Follow the money

A recent Spokesman article, "Realtors are buying a voice in Spokane primary elections," (July 21) detailed the landslide of money coming into Spokane elections from the Washington Realtor's political group (Realtors' Political Action Committee). It is essential to understand the profound impact this predominantly West Side money will have on our city.

Keepin’ it real

I have a few questions. If patients were told they would be prescribed heroin, instead of oxycontin, would they have filled the prescription? If the product was labeled Agent Orange, instead of Roundup, would consumers still make the purchase?

‘Chain migration’ hypocrisy

Send her back! Yes, send Melania back. Melania came to this country in 1996 as a young model with the help of a modeling agency run by a friend of Trump. Initially, with a visitor visa and no work permit, she was illegally paid $20,000 for 10 modeling jobs. That was against the existing immigration law. This violation would have technically prohibited her from later changing her immigration status in the U.S.
