It was the West Coast Conference’s first-place women’s basketball team against the last-place team on Thursday.

PULLMAN – Washington State has traveled to face Washington tons of times. Just not with circumstances like these.

Gonzaga’s starting frontcourt got more national recognition on Thursday when junior Graham Ike was named one of 10 candidates for the Karl Malone Award, given annually to the country’s top power forward.

This is one of the rare years when the Zags are projected just inside or just outside the field of 68 by most bracket gurus. Gonzaga hasn’t been in this position since 2016 when the Zags won the West Coast Conference Tournament. They received an 11 seed, a strong indication they wouldn’t have gone dancing if they didn’t cut down the nets in Las Vegas.

Among the many motivations David Riley had for designing a difficult nonconference schedule, this week’s stretch of three games in five days was one of them.
