Gonzaga, Portland seeking momentum in Wednesday’s clash

Two teams that haven’t had the seasons they envisioned collide Wednesday at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Gonzaga, accustomed to winning West Coast Conference titles and making extended runs in March Madness, trails Saint Mary’s by two games in the standings and currently doesn’t make the tournament in most bracket projections. Portland won 19 games in coach Shantay Legans’ first season, but year three has been up and down. The Pilots (9-15, 3-6 WCC) showed positive signs with a pair of wins last week after a rough 2-12 stretch.

Gonzaga’s offense stalls in second half, Saint Mary’s holds GU to season-low five assists

There were trends in Gonzaga’s first five losses of the season and they reappeared in loss No. 6 on Saturday night. The Zags had success early but couldn’t solve Saint Mary’s physical defense for most of the second half – one of the primary reasons the Gaels dug out a 64-62 victory in front of a full house at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
