The Spokane Chiefs have signed head coach Brad Lauer and assistant coach Jake Toporowski to multiyear contract extensions, the team announced Monday.

The Spokane Chiefs entered day two of the Western Hockey League prospect draft for 2011-born players on the clock with the first pick of the second round and selected defenseman Braydon Lynam from Sherwood Park, Alberta 24th overall.

The Western Hockey League prospects draft of players born in 2011 was held Wednesday, and the Spokane Chiefs had two early selections to restock a lineup that finished second in the U.S. Division but sixth in the Western Conference and was eliminated from the first round of the playoffs by Prince George in five games.

As recently as Feb. 6, when they allowed the last-place Vancouver Giants to snap an eight-game losing streak, the Spokane Chiefs were on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.

The Spokane Chiefs learned their postseason schedule on Monday and will open the Western Hockey League playoffs on Friday at Prince George.

The Spokane Chiefs team that coach Brad Lauer left in December when he went to help coach Team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Minnesota was drastically different than the one he returned to.

If the season ended today, the Spokane Chiefs would qualify for the playoffs out of the Western Conference of the Western Hockey League.

Last season on their run to the Western Hockey League championship series, the Spokane Chiefs featured a prolific offense – second in the WHL in goals scored with the top-ranked power play.

Monday was NHL roster cut-down day, and with that came the news that 19-year-old Berkly Catton made the opening night roster of the Seattle Kraken. The move carries ramifications for both the Kraken and the Spokane Chiefs.
