Spokane Valley faces shortfalls in road maintenance budget

Spokane Valley has a reputation for keeping its roads in good condition. But now, with its funding for road preservation in decline, city officials may have to look at raising taxes to maintain roads – which the city hasn’t done since 2009.

City awards No. 2 contract for North Monroe work

The Spokane City Council approved a $4.3 million contract with Murphy Brothers, Inc. to build a portion of the North Monroe Corridor Project from Carlisle to Chelan avenues. The contract – approved Monday afternoon on a 5 to 1 vote with Councilman Mike Fagan voting in opposition – is the second of two contracts awarded for construction of a 1.1 mile section of North Monroe Street from Indiana to Kiernan avenues. Councilwoman Candace Mumm was not present for the vote.

Barker project keeps rail crossing reduction plan on track

A dozen years after officials released a plan aimed at improving safety by removing 75 rail crossings from Spokane to Athol, Idaho, most of the concepts are stalled. Only two bridge projects in the Spokane Regional Transportation Council’s Bridging the Valley plan have been completed since its inception: the Havana Street bridge, which opened in 2012 at a cost of $7.9 million, and the Rathdrum state Highway 41-53 bridge.
