Man dies in Post Falls drowning

A Spokane Valley man died Sunday morning from an apparent drowning in the Spokane River in Post Falls. Michael Williams, 25, was pronounced dead at Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene. Williams was swimming Saturday evening at Q’emiln Park when he slipped under the surface for unknown reasons.

A Silver Valley woman found out how passionate Keri Alexander is against littering when she decided to toss trash from her vehicle at the I-90 exit at Osburn. Keri, the publisher of the Shoshone News-Press, saw red when she saw that blatant disregard for the state's littering laws -- and her community. Now, the litterbug is facing a court date.

Huckleberries: Silver Valley publisher takes littering seriously

Keri Alexander, publisher of the Shoshone News Press in the Silver Valley, is death on littering, so much so that she has organized grassroots litter patrols to pick up trash along the freeway. She has wondered what she would do if she witnessed someone littering. She no longer has to wonder. She took action when she caught a female motorist dumping trash out her window at the Osburn exit of Interstate 90.

Weekend Wild Card — July 2-4

I enjoy these three-day weekends. It gives me a chance to catch up on the honey-do's, as well as relax. Independence Day means hanging out at the parade and then hosting a family barbecue. Mrs. O loves the fireworks show. So we'll probably brave the 10s of 1000s on the waterfront Monday night to see it.

65YO Seattle man drowns at Twin Lakes

Donald A. Greene, 65, of Seattle, drowned in lower Twin Lakes about 1 p.m. Friday after jumping off a boat to swim. A relative on the boat and others on shore were unable to rescue him after he yelled for help. KCSO divers located Greene's body about 5 hours later in 19 feet of water. The search was hampered by poor visibility and heavy vegetation.

Man missing in Twin Lakes

The holiday weekend is getting off to a tragic start in Twin Lakes today as divers continue searching for a suspected drowning victim. Before going under the water, the 65-year-old man had jumped from a stopped boat to cool off in the lake at Twin Lakes Village, said Jim Lyon, spokesman for Northern Lakes Fire District.

Guardian: Ban private fireworks

The Boise Guardian wants a ban on private fireworks, after a fireworks-caused fire burned a house, an outbuilding and 2,500 acres of the Boise foothills: "Possession of guns is protected by the U.S. Constitution, but fireworks are not a “right” of citizens. We say there is nothing patriotic about burning houses and injuring people with fireworks."

Blackwell Island annexation begins

A request filed Friday asks the city of Coeur d’Alene to annex a largely developed portion of Blackwell Island. The currently unincorporated land is owned by Marina Yacht Club LLC, a subsidiary of the Hagadone Corporation, and is leased to the entities that operate The Cedars Floating Restaurant and Hagadone Marine Center.
