KCSO seeks hit-and-run pickup

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office is seeking help identifying a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run collision near Hayden. At about 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Dakota Howard, 21, of Spirit Lake, was driving his Ford Ranger pickup carrying three passengers east on West Hayden Avenue when he was hit head-on by an unknown man turning south on Huetter Road.

CHS picks Hanna for boys’ basketball

Tony Hanna has aspired to coach at the highest level possible. So to land at Coeur d’Alene High as the boys basketball coach – at a 5A school – allows Hanna to check off a box. Hanna, who has coached at 3A Timberlake the last five years, was offered the Vikings’ position Wednesday. He replaces Kurt Lundblad, who was fired last month.

In an editorial, Marty Trillhaase of the Lewiston Tribune comments on the permitless carry law that takes effect today: "The conceal carry movement, in fact, may be making us less secure. Looking over records from 1979 to 2010, Stanford law professor John J. Donohue III linked these laws to 'substantially higher rates' of violent crime."

Rare Earth singer to perform in CdA

Peter Rivera, the former lead singer of the popular 1970s band, Rare Earth, will perform with Spokane-based The Step Brothers in downtown Coeur d'Alene Friday evening. Rivera, whose children graduated from Coeur d'Alene High, will be making a rare appearance when he performs for 1st Friday Funk.

Permitless carry takes effect today

Buckle your seatbelt, my Huckleberry friend, permitless carry is now the law of Idaho, in time for the Fourth of July celebration in Coeur d'Alene. Progressive PAC forms in Lake City

Don't look now, but a progressive PAC is forming in Coeur d'Alene, with a goal of bringing balance back to local politics. Coeur d'Alene brothers Dan and Sherm Hanks are the brain trust of the new Freedom PAC. That name, of course, will make the Liberty wing of the Republican Party go nuts.

Sweeping reform initiative falling short

It looks like a sweeping campaign finance reform initiative may fall short of the number of verified signatures needed to make the November ballot – even though backers collected roughly 79,000 signatures, when just 47,623 valid ones were required. On my bike ride to work this morning, I noticed a Waste Management truck picking up garbage in my neighborhood, the last day of service by the company to the city of Coeur d'Alene. STCU to open downtown CdA branch

The region’s favorite credit union has announced plans Thursday to open a new branch location with a view of Coeur d’Alene’s McEuen Park. Remodeling is scheduled to begin this summer at 401 Front Avenue, Suite 100, in downtown Coeur d’Alene. STCU is leasing the former Bank of America branch from Blackridge Properties.

Nevada politicians visit 5YO assault victim

Nevada politicians were in Twin Falls recently to visit the 5-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted at the Fawnbrook Apartments. Spokane County sheriff’s deputies are searching for a man who may have been shot by a credit union customer during an attempted robbery Thursday afternoon. Witnesses reported an armed robbery at the STCU South Valley branch, 13211 E. 32nd Ave., around 1:40 p.m. Thursday.

Lewiston PD shuts down weekend info

Looks like Lewiston Police Chief Chris Ankeny could use some PR training. Ankeny has issued a new policy that restricts the flow of public info about criminal activity that occurs on weekends. Ankeny's policy will limit info from his department from noon Friday until noon Monday. Ankeny says he doesn't have the staff to handle media inquiries.
