Review: Brett Eldredge showcases voice, showmanship at Northern Quest

During Brett Eldredge’s 80-minute set, he mentioned his first show in Spokane years ago at the Knitting Factory. In terms of the night’s refreshments, he shared, “I’m on my second whiskey.” He also repeatedly mentioned the perfect weather (it dipped to the 50s by concert’s end) and his mood: “I’ve got no worries right now. Isn’t that how it should be?”

Running Tab: In defense of Spokane’s culinary scene

“Are there any good restaurants in Spokane?” the young couple from Seattle asked me, with a slight air of superiority, during a wedding reception in Northern California on June 8. I responded without missing a beat, “Absolutely! Spokane’s food scene is burgeoning, and it’s an exciting time. Farm-to-table dining is top notch, with the freshest of vegetables and fruits. The craft beer and wine scenes are thriving. There are restaurants with excellent cocktails and views to match.”

Hansens close businesses

In a Facebook post Friday afternoon, restaurateur Kate Hansen announced that her husband, chef Jeremy Hansen, and she decided to shutter Common Crumb Artisan Bakery and Biscuit Wizard in Saranac Commons on Sunday. Here’s the post from Kate Hansen: “There is something I’ve been meaning to share for a while, and it is finally time. Jeremy and I have come to a crossroads in our business pursuits and will be wrapping up our time at the wonderful Saranac Commons this Sunday. It’s not every day that an opportunity is given to create a bakery in a historic building, and we took that opportunity and ran with it.”

Where to find martinis – shaken or stirred – in Spokane on National Martini Day today

Before my current love affair with all things Old Fashioned, the martini was the poison of choice. Bombay Sapphire gin martini, extra dirty, extra olives. (BTW, I accept that gin is an acquired taste, but gin martinis are the only real martinis. Vodka isn’t just a morning drink anymore and is OK in martinis, but gin martinis are the only real martinis.)

The Spokane Indians have their 2019 season home opener Friday night against the Boise Hawks at Avista Stadium, but a new season of baseball isn’t the only thing that is making its debut this weekend. Five concession items are premiering this Indians season, offering more variety beyond hamburgers, hot dogs and beer. New to the menu at Avista: salmon burgers, boneless chicken wings, berry acai cups, yakisoba noodle bowls and Philly cheese steaks.

Soured on lemonade stands? Well, it’s tough lemons in Texas

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a law Monday that prohibits police from shutting down children’s lemonade stands, lemonade in this case being the sweet-and-tart cold beverage and not the sixth hit studio album by Houston, Texas, native Beyonce dropped in 2016.
