Hawks hold back Nampa in opener

MERIDIAN, Idaho – It took the team that’s frequently been to state a while to put away the team that hadn’t been there in some time Thursday. In the end, Lakeland, which is making its 10th consecutive trip to state, held off Nampa, which was attending state for the first time in seven years.

Vikings open state with bang

NAMPA, Idaho – It was nothing short of a defensive and offensive exhibition – from the best player to the last one on the bench. And that was just in the first half for the defending state champ Coeur d’Alene High girls basketball team.

Girls state basketball starts today

If ever there was a lock for a repeat state championship, it’s the Coeur d’Alene girls basketball team. Remember the Boston Celtics of the 1960s? Or UCLA of the same era?

Then & Now: Still the big fish

This may sound like a fisherman’s tale, but former St. Maries High volleyball coach Mitch Santos has pulled more fish from the St. Joe River than he had victories coaching. And he had plenty of wins.

Bonners Ferry wins district, earns state bid

RATHDRUM – In three previous years, the Bonners Ferry girls basketball team came up short in the district title game and had to try to bounce back the next night to earn a state berth. Finally, the Badgers decided to take the easier road to state – albeit they didn’t make it easy on their coach – as top-seeded Bonners Ferry survived a first-half scoring drought and frantic final 2 minutes to hold off No. 2 Timberlake 38-35 in the 3A District I-II championship game Friday at Lakeland High School.

Vikings’ junior Austin called to lead

If Coeur d’Alene boys basketball coach Kent Leiss had his way, his top player, junior guard Devon Austin, wouldn’t be playing as much as he is this year. Not that Leiss dislikes Austin’s 19 points-per-game average, which leads all 5A Inland Empire League players. No, Leiss would take fewer points and play Austin less if he had a choice because he knows it would make him and the team better.

Cards hope to get rockin’ at regionals

The photo on the North Idaho College wrestling team’s media guide says it all. There the Cardinals are with their coaches standing on a large pile of rocks. The stated theme is obvious: rock-solid tradition.

Lake City girls continue late turnaround

The Lake City girls basketball team is figuring things out. The fourth-seeded Timberwolves survived their second straight loser-out game, thumping No. 2 Post Falls 59-30 Thursday in the 5A Region I tournament at The Arena.

Spartans defy odds with perfect record

Few would have thought the Priest River boys basketball team would be undefeated and ranked second in the state among 3A teams going into the next-to-last week of the regular season. Not one of the 11 Spartans probably would have predicted it. I’d ask for a lie detector test if any of them claimed as much.

Coeur d’Alene girls secure state berth

Hard to believe that the defending 5A girls basketball state champion Coeur d’Alene Vikings had redemption in mind, but they did Tuesday. Post Falls knocked off Coeur d’Alene at Elmer Jordan Court in the Region I title game a year ago, and the Vikings were determined not to let it happen again.

CdA, Post Falls girls cruise to title game

The Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls girls basketball teams showed clearly Friday why they’re the two top 5A teams in Region I. Top seed and No. 1-ranked Coeur d’Alene suffocated fourth-seeded Lake City 62-36 and No. 2 Post Falls did likewise to No. 3 Lewiston, 60-44, in 5A Region I tournament openers before an estimated crowd of 900 at Elmer Jordan Court.

Lake City’s Sanders picks Miami over UCLA

Billy Sanders did an about-face Wednesday morning. A little more than a week after the Lake City tight end/defensive end had given UCLA an oral commitment, Sanders signed with the University of Miami – the school he initially committed to a year ago.
