Coburn motivated in return to mound

It’s been nearly a year since the deflating loss at the State 5A high school softball tournament, and Coeur d’Alene pitcher Amber Coburn still tears up talking about it. Coeur d’Alene and eventual state champ Eagle were scoreless after seven innings, setting up tiebreaker play. The Vikings scored a run in the top of the eighth.

Spring throws snow at North Idaho teams

Are you as glad as I am that March is behind us? Some of March’s miserable weather followed us into April. In Coeur d’Alene, where I live, we awoke to about 2 inches of snow last Thursday. I thought perhaps it was a cruel April Fool’s joke, but realized as I looked at the white-draped yard that April 1 was the day before.

Off to the races, throws and jumps

A year ago, North Idaho high school track coaches were bemoaning the cold, snowy weather. Collectively, they wondered how their athletes would be able to work into shape and compete with southern Idaho athletes who usually get a head start on the rest of the state.

Coeur d’Alene storms ahead, holds off Lake City

The Coeur d’Alene baseball team opened a 9-0 lead through two innings over crosstown rival Lake City. Forgive first-year Vikings coach Nick Rook if he felt his team had just a one-run lead. The way his team has had a propensity to give up runs, not even Rook thought the margin was safe.

Pitching wins championships

You want a theme among area high school softball teams this spring? Like it seems to be every year, things should start and begin with pitching – especially among the four 5A Inland Empire League teams. All four of those teams return their top pitchers and each is committed to play in college.

TEAMS READY TO PLAY OUTSIDE

You know it’s been a long winter when you hear Lewiston High School baseball coach Tom Grunenfelder talk about snow in the second week of March. Yes, the poor Bengals got snow this week in Lewiston – on back-to-back days even, enough that it interrupted one practice. With the forecast calling for warmth by the weekend, a season-opening tournament in Lewiston was definitely a go, though.

Cheever a great get for NIC

Bianca Cheever couldn’t have asked for a better detour from NCAA Division I basketball this season. The Australian native landed in Pocatello two years ago to play at Idaho State University. After a redshirt season, Cheever saw considerable minutes as a part-time starter last year.

Familiar faces abound at Idaho All-Star games

There’s a hint of a rematch of the State 5A girls basketball championship game when the seniors gather Saturday for the sixth annual Idaho State High School All-Star doubleheader at North Idaho College’s Rolly Williams Court. Coeur d’Alene held off Centennial 54-50 in overtime three weeks ago in the 5A final. Six players and the coaches from those teams will square off when the North takes on the South at NIC.
