Bulldogs end state drought

BOISE – Until Thursday afternoon, one had to go back 43 years to find the last time a Sandpoint High boys basketball team had won a game at state. The drought ended when Sandpoint handled Bishop Kelly 60-53 in a State 4A tournament opener at Borah High School.

Trojans scrape by in opener

NAMPA, Idaho – Mike McLean didn’t tell his Post Falls High boys basketball team to leave the Idaho Center through the back door Thursday evening. But there was a hint of disappointment and embarrassment – this after the Trojans found a way to pull out a 63-59 win over Borah in a State 5A tournament opener.

NIC serves as host

North Idaho College men’s basketball coach Jared Phay has 99 career victories in five seasons. He would like to get to 100, but not for a selfish reason. The 100th victory would put his Cardinals in the Region 18 tournament championship game.

Trojans streak ahead

The Post Falls boys basketball team has qualified for state six times in the past 20 years. Second-year coach Mike McLean, a Post Falls graduate, doesn’t think the frequency of qualifying for state is enough. Once every four years or so isn’t a good ratio in McLean’s eyes.

Fine finish for CdA girls

Coeur d’Alene High senior guard Sadie Simon said the Vikings girls basketball season had an appropriate ending in more ways than one. Simon was on the court Saturday when senior teammate Whitney Heleker banked in a 23-foot shot with one second left to secure a second consecutive 5A state championship.

NIC’s chance on McGoldrick pays off

North Idaho College sophomore wrestler Tim McGoldrick had to travel about 2,500 miles to get a second chance and find himself. It’s been well worth it. Three years ago, McGoldrick received a full-ride scholarship to Rider University, an NCAA Division I school in Lawrenceville, N.J., about 90 minutes from his home in northeastern Pennsylvania.

No. 1 Lewiston, No. 2 Lake City upended

Perhaps it was a coming of age for the 5A Region I boys basketball tournament lowest seeds Tuesday as the co-Inland Empire League champs were upended. Third-seeded Post Falls upset No. 1-ranked Lewiston 69-62 at Lewiston to capture the regional title, while No. 4 Coeur d’Alene knocked off second-seeded Lake City 59-41 in a loser-out game at Lake City.

Baker goes out with career-best effort

KUNA, Idaho – Lake City High girls basketball standout Katie Baker took as much satisfaction in the Timberwolves capturing a consolation trophy Saturday morning as she did two years ago when they won the State 5A championship. Baker matched the number on her uniform in her final prep game, scoring a career-high 33 points as Lake City outraced Madison 66-61 Saturday morning to earn fourth place at Kuna High School.

Jerome outlasts Lakeland for 3rd

MERIDIAN, Idaho – The easy explanation is the Lakeland High girls basketball team left everything on the court the night before, when the Hawks came within a whisker of advancing to the State 4A championship game. Still, Lakeland was every bit in the game for third place Saturday morning. But Jerome pulled away in the fourth quarter in a 69-52 decision at Mountain View High School.

Seventh heaven

NAMPA, Idaho – Whitney Heleker needed all the air that she normally places under her high-arcing shots as the clock wound down. If she didn’t put as much arc on what turned out to be the game-winning shot, it may not have made it to the backboard.

CdA girls claim state championship

NAMPA, Idaho – Whitney Heleker needed all the air that she normally places under her high-arcing shots as the clock wound down. Heck, if she didn’t put as much arc on what turned out to be the game-winning shot, it may not have made it to the backboard.

CdA in title game

NAMPA, Idaho – Coeur d’Alene girls basketball coach Dale Poffenroth said he had to coach at halftime Friday. The Vikings were ahead 31-28 in a rematch of last year’s state championship game, and Poffenroth didn’t like how things were going.

Lakeland almost pulls off upset

What’s more disappointing, to be in an embarrassing 17-point hole or to find a way to dig out, take a brief lead and have a chance to win in regulation before falling in overtime? Ask the Lakeland High girls basketball team. That’s exactly what happened to the Hawks in a 62-55 loss to No. 1 Bonneville in a State 4A tournament semifinal Friday at Mountain View High School in Meridian.
