This would have been the week Bailey Hewitt of Clark Fork was going to tune up for the chance to defend four championships at the State 1A track and field meet next week. Hewitt wasn’t challenged in capturing titles in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles last spring. And she surprised by taking gold in the long and triple jump. It was a surprise in a sense that she had spent minimal training time in the jumps.

The loud exhale that could be heard near the Lake City High softball diamond Wednesday afternoon was coming from the Timberwolves in general and coach Laura Tolzmann in particular. Lake City shared the Inland Empire League title last year but saw its season end abruptly when it was eliminated in the 5A Region I tournament.

When it comes to identifying what events best suit an athlete in high school track, it takes more than just lining said athlete up and seeing how fast he or she can run. Take, for example, Lake City senior Tanner Schalk. He was always the fastest runner in his class, but not the fastest among his peers in the Inland Empire League.

The 10th annual District I Meet of Champions may not be remembered for all of the personal-best times and marks. What most will recall years from now is the final regular-season track and field meet featured the best weather by far this spring. Some thought it was the best weather in 10 years for the meet that showcases athletes from all classifications.

It’s understandable why the Oregon State University baseball team recruited J.J. Turbin. The two-time NCAA Division I champion Beavers found much to like about the Coeur d’Alene senior. To begin with, Turbin is at the head of his class athletically and academically.

It would be accurate to say that Travis Porter came out of nowhere last year for the Timberlake High School boys track and field team. It also would be accurate to say he had to step out of a shadow, cast by a teammate who didn’t turn out, to achieve success.

Vikings sweep first-place Bengals

The Coeur d’Alene baseball team revived some of the old magic Saturday afternoon. The Vikings swept league-leading Lewiston 4-3 and 7-5 in an Inland Empire League doubleheader. It was appropriate considering Coeur d’Alene dedicated its field in honor of former coach Ted Page, whose teams regularly held their own against the Bengals.

For two decades, Ted Page’s Coeur d’Alene High baseball teams played their home games downtown at McEuen Field. He retired from coaching following the 1994 season – two years before the Vikings started playing their home games on the south end of their campus.

It’s a tried-and-true winning formula when it comes to high school softball. Nearly flawless pitching, timely hitting and air-tight defense. It all added up to a 3-0 victory by Lake City over Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday in the first of four Inland Empire League showdowns between the crosstown rivals.
