Warriors qualify for state, call it something else

PLUMMER – Don't tell the Kootenai High volleyball players they're headed to state. The way they see it, they're just headed to another tournament. Kootenai captured its third straight 1A District I championship as the Warriors easily dispatched of Wallace 25-8, 25-11, 25-19 Saturday at Lakeside Middle School's gym.

Lewiston says ‘Oh-oh’ to Ah-Hi

Lewiston High football coach Emmett Dougherty's worst nightmare played out in front of him Friday. It was called the Kevin Ah-Hi Show. Not to be overshadowed and making a special appearance, however, was Coeur d'Alene's defense.

LC wins, advances to state

It was a start that first-year Lake City High volleyball coach Jen Owen hadn't seen this season. Her team's play through the body of the 5A Region I championship match was something she hadn't seen, either. It all added up in the end, though, as the Timberwolves eventually cruised past Coeur d'Alene 14-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-18 to claim the regional title before a crowd estimated at 600 at Elmer Jordan Court.

Vikings come prepared to work

The Coeur d'Alene High football team won't go so far as to say its better than last year – at least not yet. But the Vikings, who fell just short of capturing the 5A state championship last fall, believe they're at least as good as a year ago. There are elements of the 2005 edition that are much improved over 2004.

Lake City has ball last, hangs on to beat Lewiston

LEWISTON – The best defense for the Lake City High football team Friday was played by its offense. The Timberwolves' offense ran out the final 4 minutes, 5 seconds as Lake City held off the Lewiston Bengals 44-42 in a 5A Inland Empire League offensive slugfest at Bengal Field.

Making a point at Sandpoint

If a junkyard bulldog took on adult-like facial features, it would most likely resemble the mug of Sandpoint High boys soccer coach Randy Thoreson, especially as his brow furrows during a match. Thoreson, 58, could be Vince Lombardi incarnate. Thoreson can be gruff and no-nonsense like the late Hall of Fame pro football coach. But perhaps the most striking similarity between the two is Thoreson is a winner and demands nothing less than excellence from his players.

Sandpoint wins IEL crown

Usually, a quick goal sparks the Sandpoint High boys soccer team. Tuesday, the fast start seemed to do the opposite. It took a second goal late in the match for Sandpoint to finally feel secure as the Bulldogs captured their eighth consecutive Inland Empire League championship, shutting out Coeur d'Alene 2-0 at CdA.

Panhandle Picks with Greg Lee

I've reached October with a lead. That usually proves to be a harbinger of another season victory. I increased my lead by one by picking correctly the lone game my guest, Chris Chatburn, and I differed. Lewiston needed all of a 14-0 lead to hold off visiting Sandpoint 14-13.

Hout, T-Wolves smother Lakeland

When the Lake City High football team needed to be stout, along came sophomore defensive tackle Byron Hout. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Hout disrupted Lakeland's offense time after time in the second half, including a tackle on a momentum-turning play, as the Timberwolves overcame a sluggish first half to pull away from the Hawks 36-12 in an Inland Empire League game Friday at LC.

CdA takes control of IEL

Coeur d'Alene High soccer forward Jaimee Myers called it jittery. Her coach called it flat. Regardless of whose description was more accurate, Vikings coach Tarragh Carr used the 5-minute halftime of the Inland Empire League match at Corbit Field in Rathdrum to stoke a fire in her team after an uninspiring first half Thursday.

LC’s Delport aims to keep fire inside

Patti Delport swears she knows how her oldest son came by his speed. It's from chasing him around the house with a wooden spoon. Then, just as he is most of the time now, he was difficult to chase down.

Payment breaks tape at Farragut

Whitney Payment of Priest River finally experienced what it felt like to break the tape first at the finish line. It was difficult to distinguish which Payment enjoyed more Saturday at Farragut State Park – the delight in her first career victory or the improvement she had made since taking up the sport last year as a sophomore.

Moscow keeps cruising toward state

Call it an audition for the 4A state volleyball tournament. Behind a varied attack and air-tight defense, the undefeated Moscow Bears waltzed past the Lake City Timberwolves 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 in an Inland Empire League match Thursday between conference leaders at LC, the site late next month for the 4A state tourney.

Taking another run at it

It's been a slow start this season for the defending 5A state cross country champion Coeur d'Alene High girls team. After the euphoria of capturing the 2004 title wore off, Coeur d'Alene began thinking about a repeat. But there's been significant change.
Sports

Taking it step at a time

One by one the Lakeland High girls soccer team has checked off the goals on its things-to-accomplish list. There was the first win in school history over Coeur d'Alene two years ago. There was the first win over Lake City last year. And then there was the first victory over 4A state powerhouse Sandpoint in a season-opening match this fall.

Defense steps up as Viks overhaul Sandpoint in second half

SANDPOINT – After allowing big play after big play in the first half Friday, the Coeur d'Alene defensive players took it upon themselves to make the big plays in the second half. And, boy, how. The Vikings turned three interceptions into touchdowns in the final two quarters as Coeur d'Alene overcame the loss of its top offensive weapon for a 35-27 come-from-behind win over Sandpoint in an Inland Empire League football game played before a crowd estimated at 2,000 at Barlow Stadium.

Defensive specialty

The evolution of high school volleyball – to come into alignment with the college and club game – has undergone another change for the 2005 season. It's certainly less subtle than rally scoring, but it'll be more obvious to the eye of the casual or uninformed fan because of uniform apparel.

Ah-Hi opens Knights’ eyes

Funny how a fumble on the game's first play can light a fire under a running back. East Valley stripped the ball from Coeur d'Alene senior Kevin Ah-Hi seconds into the game Friday, and the Knights turned the miscue into a quick 7-0 lead.

Bengals bust loose for win

The Lewiston High volleyball team has been no better than the third-best team in the Inland Empire League's three-team 5A pod for years. But coming into the 2005 season, Bengals coach Judy Fong believed her team had finally reached the point at which it can compete with Lake City and Coeur d'Alene.

Badgers expect rough beginning

How's this for a scenario? The Bonners Ferry High football team, picked by the coaches to win the Intermountain League championship, could be winless by the time it begins league play later this month. Heavy emphasis on "could." The Badgers fell to a good Libby, Mont., team 42-7 in a season opener last week and they take on former league rival Lakeland in a home opener at Kenny Mendenhall Stadium on Friday.

Lake City stumbles out of blocks until block

After running up and down the field with little to show for it, the Lake City High football team used a blocked punt to secure a win Wednesday night in a game ripe with season-opening mistakes by both teams and the referees. Sophomore defensive lineman Byron Hout blocked a Ken Wood punt and LC's Steve Novotny recovered, setting up the visiting Timberwolves' crucial touchdown in a 29-9 non-league win over host University.

NSL coaches predict major season for Miners

If things go as predicted by the North Star League football coaches, the 2005 season could look quite similar to 2004. The most anticipated change would be a flip-flop in the top two finishers. Wallace is picked by the league's coaches to unseat defending champ Clark Fork. Otherwise, the state playoff qualifiers would remain the same with Wallace tabbed to claim the 1A Division I berth and Clark Fork to be joined in the Division II playoffs by Mullan.
