Pullman just shy of repeating title

Team titles for Eastern Washington teams seemingly blew away with the stiff non-stop winds Saturday at the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington State 2A, 1A and B Boys Track and Field Championships at Eastern Washington University's Woodward Stadium. Still, nine area athletes and two relays captured gold at the meets for the state's three smallest classifications concluded three-day runs.

CdA tabs CV’s Poffenroth as girls coach

Dale Poffenroth, one of the most successful girls basketball coaches in Greater Spokane League history, has resigned at Central Valley High School to become head coach at Coeur d'Alene. "I guess you reach that stage where you need a challenge," Poffenroth said. "I had one here last year. People said all the kids graduated. We had one senior and six sophomores and went 25-4 and finished seventh at state. They'll continue to do the same (next year). I don't have that to prove anymore."

Heart of sprinter spurs Tigers to title

BOISE – Brian Kluss cried talking about the come-from-behind win by Caleb Cazier in the 400 meters Saturday afternoon. The tears came about 90 minutes after watching his sprint standout pull up in the 100 before gutting out a last-place finish for one team point despite aggravating a strained hamstring.

LC comes up just shy of title

BOISE – Here's another one for the it's-a-game-of-inches department: The Timberline High baseball team scored what proved to be the winning run without the benefit of hitting a ball out of the infield. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, Kurt Dykstra sharply struck a ball that Lake City third baseman Tom Barlow snagged diving to his left. But Barlow couldn't get a force out anywhere after getting up from the ground as the Wolves of Boise took a 7-6 lead.

Lake City girls: best of the best

BOISE – Kelly Reed has no doubt where his two-time State 5A track champion Lake City High girls team stands in state history. At the top looking down.

Dyck sidelined with injury; Willy first in triple jump

BOISE – One of the most storied high school athletic careers in Idaho history came to a tearful end Thursday. And Amy Dyck's tears weren't for herself either. They were for her teammates on Sandpoint's 400-meter relay.

Lake City earns date in semis

BOISE – One inning in the Lake City High baseball team's 5A state opener epitomized what Timberwolves coach Cory Bridges warned his team could happen. Fortunately for Bridges' Timberwolves, Lake City came out smelling like a rose and not bemoaning the typical first-game jitters many teams make at state.

Tigers rout rest of 3A boys field

SPIRIT LAKE, Idaho — He's back. And except for the expandable wrap and athletic tape around his left hamstring, Timberlake High sprint standout Caleb Cazier appeared to be in top form Saturday afternoon.

Carr pitches Lakeland past Kellogg

David Carlisle didn't want to pitch Wednesday. The Lakeland High junior right-hander wasn't frightened, mind you. Not after throwing a no-hitter Saturday in the first day of the 3A District I baseball tournament.

Garcia makes dashing move

Lake City High track coach Kelly Reed looked at his stopwatch and his decision was made. Meagan Garcia had just beaten 4A state sprint champion Amy Dyck of Sandpoint for a second straight time in the 100-meter dash last Thursday, proving her win over her friendly rival a week earlier wasn't a fluke. Garcia's time was an expeditious 12.3 seconds, breaking her previous school record.

On a roll to Pocatello

There's nothing mysterious about the Coeur d'Alene High softball team. It's just that after 25 wins in as many games, including five victories against their intracity rival, no opponent has been able to solve the Vikings.

It’s a blur at Champions meet

The District I Meet of Champions provided the stage where all high school track and field athletes in North Idaho were on equal footing Thursday afternoon in ideal weather. From there, though, the fleetest afoot, the strongest throwers and the highest and longest jumpers separated themselves from the pack as 15 meet records fell in the fifth annual meet that more than served its purpose – as a showcase for the top athletes in the region regardless of classification and a tuneup for state-qualifying meets next weekend.
