They’re onstage for different reasons, and tell jokes with different styles. But the men and women taking the stage at bars, nightclubs and other venues around Spokane are all working together to re-establish what has been a sleepy comedy scene since the boom of the 1980s and early ’90s.

Lynette Vehrs, Mike Volz will vie for Rep. Kevin Parker’s seat in November

In the race to replace state Rep. Kevin Parker, voters in November will be able to choose a retired nurse or the chief deputy county treasurer. Democrat Lynette Vehrs topped four other candidates in Tuesday’s primary with 44 percent of the vote to easily move to the general election. Joining her on the ballot will be Republican Mike Volz, the chief deputy county treasurer, who took 29 percent.

Mayor Condon selects Assistant Chief Craig Meidl to lead Spokane Police Department

Spokane Mayor David Condon bypassed all the candidates to be the next Spokane Police chief and selected Assistant Chief Craig Meidl to lead the department. The surprise announcement means Condon opted against hiring the two finalists who interviewed for the job last month in forums last month. They were Robert Lehner, the 61-year-old chief of police in Elk Grove, California, and Yakima Police Chief Dominic Rizzi Jr., 54.

Spokane police leaders union cites mayor for ‘failure’ dealing with chief

A statement released Friday night by members of the Spokane Police Lieutenants and Captains Association to city elected officials says Mayor David Condon has not publicly acknowledged the scope of his failures in handling the ouster of former Chief Frank Straub, who was accused for years of abusive, vindictive behavior.

Spokane City Council asks voters to determine if coal, oil trains should be fined

The ordinance before voters in November cites concerns about a derailment polluting water in the Spokane aquifer and Spokane River. City Councilmember Breean Beggs said he believes Congress has given local governments authority to regulate trains for health and safety reasons, but a railroad spokeswoman called the vote “a dangerous precedent.”

Panelists say police chief candidates qualified
