Finding Ingredients For Recipes Can Take A Little Extra Legwork

Merri Lou Dobler Correspondent

You’ve searched every aisle in the grocery store and you still can’t find that one ingredient for your recipe. Who ya gonna call?

Checkers will direct you to the customer service folks. They’ll contact their supplier, place an order and let you know when the item arrives.

Gary Mathews, grocery department manager at Rosauers’ Five Mile store, gets lots of requests for unusual varieties of foods ranging from cereals to yogurts, soups to wines. Diet and low-sodium products are common requests.

Look closely at the shelf tags at Rosauers. Items that are specially ordered read “SPO” next to the price.

While some of the more unusual special orders are held in the back of the store for customers to pick up, many are stocked on the shelves.

If they sell well enough, they might become a regular item.

A brief walk down the sugar, spices and flour aisle at the Five Mile Rosauers shows the following SPO’s: medium rye flour, European-style cocoa, herb blends and quick-dissolving cane sugar.

“Sometimes it gets to be a real challenge to stay on top of these SPO’s,” says Mathews, who can remember filling a request for armadillo eggs.

Today’s recipe doesn’t feature armadillo eggs and is pretty straightforward. You will have to search hard for leftovers, though, since these go fast.
