Garry Martin Selected Ewu’s Teacher Of Month

Garry Martin, a fifth-grade teacher at Longfellow Elementary School in Spokane, has been selected as Eastern Washington University’s Teacher of the Month for February.

Student Shaun Mashtare recommended his teacher for this honor. Shaun said Martin helped ease his nervousness on his first day of fifth grade by letting Shaun help him. He then told his mom that he knew “it would be a great year” from that day on. Shaun said Martin eats meals with his students, plays with them during recess and encourages them to learn.

Cheney Cowles Museum has been advised that it is one of three statewide recipients of the 1995 Governor’s Arts Awards. These awards are presented each year to honor outstanding organizations and individuals for their significant contributions to the cultural life of Washington State.

Dick Westerman, Spokane, has been named to the Kemper Securities Chairman’s Circle of Excellence. The program is for successful investment consultants who best achieve sales excellence through productivity, ethical business practice quality service and professional growth. He is a senior vice president-investments in the firm’s Spokane office.

Jeffrey Hastings, has been named a Distinguished Young Alumnus at George Fox College, Newberg, Ore.

He is the executive director of the Riverview Youth Center in Spokane, a residential treatment program for emotionally disturbed and delinquent youth. He is a 1982 GFC graduate, and holds a master’s degree in social work from Eastern Washington University.

Four Washington State University faculty members were honored recently by the WSU chapter of Mortar Board senior honor society as Outstanding Faculty Members for 1994-95.

Recognized were John Pierce, dean of the College of Liberal Arts; Ron Adkins, associate professor of zoology; Mary Watrous, assistant professor of history; and Anna Mutin, assistant professor of architecture.

Jesse Ferguson, Spokane, has been accepted for membership in the U.S. Youth Ensembles, a highly selective musical organization that will make a three-week concert tour of Europe in June. He played in the Eastern Washington University Honor Band last year, the alldistrict orchestra recently, and was a member of the all-city brass choir. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James White.
