Marie Armstrong Spokane

Service for Marie Armstrong, 95, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home with burial at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Armstrong, a homemaker, died Saturday. She was born in Harrison County, Iowa.

She had lived in Spokane since 1956 and was a member of Central Spokane Seventh-day Adventist Church and did volunteer work for Seventh-day Adventist Community Service for 26 years.

Her husband, Harvey Armstrong, died in 1966.

She is survived by four daughters, Glee Tennihill of Des Moines, Iowa, Nellie Armstrong of Seattle, Shirley Christopherson of Herrin, Ill., and Phyllis Trippel of Monroe, Wash.; four sons, Harvey Armstrong of Las Vegas, Nev., and Robert Armstrong of Des Moines, Rolland Armstrong of Alachua, Fla., and Forrest Armstrong of Greenacres; two brothers, Gerald Carrier of Odebolt, Iowa and Charles Carrier of Idaho Falls; 21 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Juquetta Arthur Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Graveside service for Juquetta “Judy” Alice Arthur, a homemaker, will be at 11 a.m. today at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry.

Mrs. Arthur, 53, died Thursday at home after an extended illness.

She was born in Spokane and attended schools in Spokane, Newport, Wash., and Priest River, Idaho.

In 1963 she married Gerald Arthur in Coeur d’Alene. They made their home in Bonners Ferry.

Mrs. Arthur thrived on cooking and her family. She could feed friends and family at a moment’s notice.

She also enjoyed going for drives, camping and fishing.

Her husband of 27 years, Gerald, died in 1990.

Survivors include one daughter, Star Arthur of Bonners Ferry; three sons, Gerald Arthur and Tim Arthur, both of Bonners Ferry, and Rich Arthur of Portland; her mother, Beatrice Monette of Wenatchee; one brother, Alfred Monette of Coeur d’Alene; four sisters, Rita Van Horen of Wenatchee, Nita Moses of Spokane, Lillian Ambleberg of Tonopah, Nev., and Darlene Napier of Rogers, Ark.; and six grandchildren.

Maize Worman Moscow, Idaho

Graveside service for Maize Worman, 91, will be at 10 a.m. today at Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse, Wash. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Worman, who died Saturday, was born in Almira, Wash.

She moved to Latah County, Idaho, with her family as a child and graduated from Palouse High School in 1920.

She and her husband, Avery Worman, lived in Spokane and Seattle before returning to Palouse in 1945. She worked at Washington State University for 19 years in the sewing department for University Housing. She retired in 1968 and moved to Potlatch, Idaho, and in 1985 she moved to Moscow, Idaho. She had lived at Good Samaritan Village for the last year.

She was a member of the Moscow Senior Citizens Club.

Her husband died in 1985. Survivors include one son, Robert Worman of Auburn, Wash.; one daughter, JoAnn Weston of Birmingham, Ala.; one brother, Jack McBride, and one sister, Bobbie Nygaard, both of Potlatch; five grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

Lisa Portrey Spokane

Service for Lisa (Mason) Portrey, 37, is set for 1 p.m. today at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2nd Ward. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeNorth is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Portrey, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

She graduated from Rogers High School in 1974 and from Trend College. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She is survived by her husband Randall Portrey; a daughter, Trisha Divine, and two sons, Robert Divine III and Mason Portrey, all of Spokane; one stepson, Ian Portrey of Idaho Falls; her parents, Charles and Winnifred Mason of Spokane; one brother, Stephen Mason of Lynden, Wash.; and one sister, Terese Engstrom of Springfield, Ore.

Donald Odeen Spokane

Service for Donald M. Odeen, 67, will be at 3 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held in in Geddes, S.D.

Mr. Odeen, who died Sunday, was born in Geddes.

He moved to Spokane from Oakland, Calif., in 1959. He worked as a maintenance engineer for Wonderbread, now Continental Baking Co., before retiring in 1990.

He was a Navy veteran and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1474. He also belonged to the Eagles Lodge 2 and Operating Engineers Union Local 280.

He is survived by his former wife, Charlene Odeen; one son, Kelly Odeen of Colbert; one brother, Harold Odeen of Spokane; and two sisters, Joan Sanders and Darlene Newman, both of Spokane.

Memorial Contributions may be given to Fire District No. 4 in Colbert.

Robert Danforth Spokane

Memorial Service for Robert M. Danforth, 73, will be at 11 a.m. today at Fowler United Methodist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Danforth, died Thursday.

He worked as a plastic fabricator for a sign company.

Mr. Danforth was nationally recognized in the art of creating miniature furniture and was a member of the Spokane Miniature Society. He was also a member of Spokane Eagles Aerie 2.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sylvia Danforth; three daughters, Teri Peterson, Tami Scott, and Debby Amann, one son, Daniel Danforth, his mother, Helen Danforth, and one sister, Peggy Zimmerman, all of Spokane; and 11 grandchildren.

Charles Housam Spokane

Service for Charles Joseph Housam, 68, is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Housam died Sunday.

He was born in Rathdrum, Idaho.

Mr. Houston served in the Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Machinists Union and worked for the Boeing Co. in Seattle and Gifford Hill in Spokane.

He is survived by his mother, Violet Housam, and one brother, David Housam, both of Spokane.

Kathryn Speranzi Mead

Funeral Mass for Kathryn E. Speranzi, 73, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Bloomsburg, Pa., Mrs. Speranzi, died Sunday.

She had been a secretary for a medical office and lived in Spokane for 30 years.

She was a member of St. Anthony Parish. She served in the Women’s Army Corps during in World War II and was stationed in England.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Anthony “Tony” Speranzi; two sons, Joseph Speranzi of Spokane and Thomas Speranzi of San Diego; one daughter, Judith Shores of Spokane; five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James ‘Willie’ Williams Jr. Airway Heights

Service for James A. “Willie” Williams Jr., 63, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will be at Medical Lake Cemetery.

Born in Paris, Ky., Mr. Williams died Sunday.

He served 20 years in the Air Force and retired in 1970 as a staff sergeant. He later worked in building maintenance, most recently for Key Tronic.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Airway Heights. He also was the past chief of the Airway Heights Volunteer Fire Department and a former Airway Heights city council member.

Survivors include one son, James Williams III, and one daughter, Rebecca Williams, both of Airway Heights; one stepson, Robert Schloss of Spokane; two stepdaughters, Jessica Schloss of Spokane and Sabrinna Schloss of Airway Heights; their mother, Kathy Williams of Airway Heights; and two sisters, Lilly Edgington of Columbus, Ohio, and Nell Graves of Lexington, Ky.

Thomas Johnson Spokane

Memorial service for Thomas Arthur Johnson, 66, is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Crossroads Baptist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Johnson died Sunday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and attended Eastern Washington State College. He served in the Air Force.

He later sold electronic materials for Cominco American and JohnsonMathey.

He was a member and usher at Crossroads Baptist Church and was active with the Gideons.

His wife, Gloria, preceded him in death. He is survived by two daughters, Beverly Mulkey of Elk and Bonnie Fite of Sunnyvale, Calif.; one son, Harold Johnson of Spokane; and six grandchildren.

Lois Scofield Spokane

Memorial service for Lois Toevs Scofield, 92, will be at 2 p.m. today at Heritage Congregational Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Scofield, an 84-year Spokane resident, died last Wednesday.

She was born Lindsborg, Kan.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and from Washington State University with a degree in English literature.

Mrs. Scofield taught at Lewis and Clark and West Valley High Schools and was a newspaper columnist and published children’s writer. She also taught Sunday school at several churches.

She was a charter member of Heritage Congregational Church and a member of the Junior League of Spokane, the Spokane Garden Club, the Landscape Association of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, The Spokane Club and Kappa Alpha Theta.

Her husband, Edward Scofield, died in 1981.

She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth McKinnon of Seattle and Marion Scofield of Spokane; one son, Edward Scofield of Niceville, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Congregational Church or the Poor Clare Nuns.

John Kimmell Tacoma

Service for John Adam Kimmell, 82, was Saturday at Mountain View Garden Chapel in Tacoma.

Mr. Kimmell, a former Medical Lake mayor, died last Wednesday.

He was born in Parsons, Kan.

He had served as mayor of Medical Lake in the late 1950s and had lived in the Tacoma area for the past four years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

His wife, Arena, died in December.

Survivors include two sons, John Kimmell II and Michael Kimmell; one daughter, Sarah Hill of Bellevue, Wash.; two sisters, Jenny Landes and Helen Sherry; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mamie Rand Spokane

Graveside service for Mamie L. Rand, 101, was held Tuesday at Riverside Memorial Park.

Miss Rand, who was born in Foreston, Minn., died Saturday.

She had lived in Spokane for 73 years. She had worked as a bookkeeper at an oil company and later owned a pet store. She was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She is survived by distant cousins.

Merton Munn Medical Lake

Memorial service for Merton D. Munn, will be at 3 p.m. today at Whitworth Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Munn, who died Monday, was born in Ohio.

In 1941 he moved to Spokane, from Greenville College in Illinois, to assume the position of dean at Whitworth College. He held this position until 1954. He served as director of research for the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia and travelled extensively in this position.

He returned to Spokane to serve as chairman of the education department and as concurrent director of evening classes at Whitworth College. He retired from Whitworth College in 1974.

He had also worked at Livingston State Teachers College in Alabama, Carroll College in Wisconsin and Silliman University in the Philippines. He served as president of Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska, for three years after his retirement.

His first wife, Ila Munn, died in 1964.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Femme Munn; two sisters, Idella Turvey and Alice Munn, both of Spring Arbor, Mich.; one brother, Vernon Munn of New Holstein, Wis.; two daughters, Gwen Long of Las Vegas, Nev., and Evelyn Dee of Goodyear, Ariz.; six grandchildren, nine greatgrandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren.

Raymond Driggs Torrance, Calif.

Memorial service for Raymond Adelbert Driggs, 56, will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Fairmount Memorial Park Chapel.

Mr. Driggs, a former Spokane resident, died Sunday in Torrance.

He was born in Spokane and graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory School.

In Spokane he worked for City Glass. He moved to California in 1971 and operated a glass store.

He is survived by his father, Claude Driggs of Spokane; three sons, Donald, David and Timothy Driggs, all of Spokane; two daughters, Stacey Williams of Spokane and Shelly Maxam of Vancouver, Wash.; two brothers, Claude and Robert Driggs; and one sister, Claudia Barnes, all of Spokane.

Rowene Ekins Orem, Utah

Service for Rowene Elizabeth (Bliss) Barraclough Ekins, 93, will be at noon Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Ekins, who died Friday in Orem, was born in Joseph, Utah.

Her first husband, John Barraclough, died, and she married Claud Ekins in 1951. He died in 1974.

She had lived in Spokane for 59 years before moving to Utah.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She taught Sunday School and was a visiting teacher in the Relief Society for 75 years.

She is survived by one sister, Idona Abendroth of Seattle; one brother, Jay Bliss of Spokane; one stepson, James Ekins of Spokane; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four greatgreat- grandchildren.
