Mead Hands University First Gsl Softball Defeat

Led by Holly Vanwert’s three hits, including two doubles, Mead took an early lead and beat visiting University 8-2 Thursday in Greater Spokane League softball.

The Panthers (3-1) held U-Hi (3-1) scoreless through the first five innings before giving up a run in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Jodie Blackman added three hits for the Panthers in the win.

Elsewhere, Gonzaga Prep (2-1) defeated host Lewis and Clark (0-3) 6-3 with a three-run seventh inning.

Meredith Giesa led the Bullpups with three hits, including a triple.

Tori Mills led Central Valley (2-2) in a 5-1 win over visiting Ferris (0-4) with two RBIs, going 2 for 4 and stealing two bases.

Winning pitcher Erin Duncan pitched four innings and gave up four hits and no runs.

Led by a solid offensive performance, North Central (2-1) overcame six errors to defeat visiting Shadle Park (2-2), 7-4.

Winning pitcher Roxanne Devine struck out 10 and walked none in her complete game.

GSL baseball

Led by Matt Miethe’s triple, double and three RBIs, Rogers (2-0) defeated visiting CV 15-2. The Bears are 1-1.

Cory Smiley of Rogers was 3 for 4, scored three runs and had an RBI. Jeff Olsen added an RBI, two hits and two runs for the Pirates.

G-Prep (1-0) was led by Steve Gleason’s five RBIs, including three on a home run in the sixth, during a 12-3 win over visiting NC (0-2).

Forrest Higgins and Mike Dacquisto each added two hits for the Bullpups in the win.

Mead and Shadle scored 26 runs between them, with Mead winning 14-12.

There were three home runs, a triple and 10 doubles in the game.

Mead was led by Damian Long’s homer and three RBIs.

Shadle’s Chris Wilson was 4 for 4 and had three doubles and three RBIs while teammate Gerritt Widman hit a grand slam in the sixth.

After 7 1/2 innings, U-Hi (1-0) led host Ferris (1-0) 12-10 before the game was called because of darkness. The game will be continued Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ferris.

Frontier soccer

First-place Cheney (4-0) was able to stay on top after edging host Pullman (1-2) 1-0 on a Kanyon Anderson goal.

After a scoreless first half, Anderson, on an assist by Levi Luhn, scored the winning goal in the first minute of the second half from 25 yards out.

Loren Grovos led West Valley to a 3-0 win over visiting Riverside/Deer Park with a goal off a penalty kick and an assist.

WV (2-1-1) took 23 shots while R/DP (2-2) took only six, five of which came in the first half.

Colville (0-4-1) and visiting Clarkston (0-2-1) finished in a 2-2 tie.

Clarkston led the Indians 2-1 until Ian McDougall scored with 10 minutes left in the match.
