WSU History Professors Win Award For Biography

A biography by Washington State University history professor LeRoy Ashby and Boise journalist Rod Gramer, entitled “Fighting the Odds: The Life of Senator Frank Church,” has won the David and Beatrice Evans Biography Award for 1994. They were honored for the year’s outstanding biography from the western United States.

Dianna Mangis, daughter of David and Judy Mangis, Spangle, has been awarded a graduate teaching assistantship by the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies at Washington State University. She is working on her master of arts in recreation administration and leisure studies. She is a 1991 graduate of Liberty High School.

Frederick Peterson, director of academic affairs at Washington State University in Spokane, recently returned from a monthlong institute, “Congress and American Democracy: An Institute on Teaching About the Constitution.” He served as director of academic affairs and lecturer at the national institute.

James Deaton, son of Hubert Deaton, Spokane, has been awarded the E-Z Crusher Honorial scholarship by the Automotive Recyclers Association Scholarship Foundation in Fairfax, Va. Deaton is a student at Eastern Washington University.

Women Helping Women have announced the addition of two new members, Karen Robideaux and Marti Kransberger to its board of directors. Robideaux is responsible for corporate relations at RW Robideaux and Co., and Kransberger is vice president for the Deaconess Medical Center Foundation.

Alannah McPherson, a graduate of Freeman High School, received the Award for Distinguished Work in the Visual Expressive Arts from Fairfield University, Fairfield, Conn. She won the award for her work involving the transfer of photographs to fabric. She is the daughter of Paul and Ruth McPherson, Spokane.

Keith Hegg, a district manager with American Express Financial Advisors Inc., has been named a Master Leader. He established himself in the top echelon of the company’s management group and exceed stringent leadership and client-service requirements. He is employed in the Spokane office.

Tomlinson Black Commercial Inc. has announced that Lorri Taylor and Gil Miltenberger have been awarded scholarships from the Inland Northwest Chapter of Certified Commercial Investment Members. The awards grant free tuition for its CI-101 Financial Analysis for Commercial Real Estate course. Taylor has just completed her first year in sales and leasing. Miltenberger has worked in commercial real estate for two years.

Janet Schmidt of Whitman County Cooperative Extension has been selected to receive the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents at its annual meeting in Bloomington, Minn. She was selected because of her work performance in southwest Washington, in Vancouver and Cathlamet. Her livestock education programs emphasized production of livestock and environmental issues associated with livestock. Her Mud Management program provided water quality, agronomic and production information to many small farm and livestock owners, and her Livestock Advisors program trained volunteers to answer questions and provide clinics for livestock owners. She recently was reassigned to Whitman County and currently lives in Pullman.
