17th Annual Quilt Show At Convention Center

Carrie Schwarze Staff writer

Now in its 17th year, the annual Quilt Show and Merchant Mall at the Spokane Convention Center continues to grow. In addition to offering the traditional displays and raffle, the Spokane Chapter of the Washington State Quilters has included many educational demonstrations and more merchants.

This weekend’s show has expanded to around 517 entries and more than 30 merchants. Because of the sheer number of quilting shops in Montana, Idaho and Washington, organizers were able to handpick the merchants that will be displaying their wares.

The show also will offer half-hour exhibitions all day, demonstrating such intricate arts as applique, hand quilting and machine quilting. There will be someone to answer questions at all times.

“Reach for the Stars,” the theme of the 1995 show, will feature artist Karla Harris, an internationally known quilter and quilt instructor from Hope, Idaho. Harris’ quilts have been pictured in several quilting books and will be in two new books this fall.

There will be tickets available for a raffle quilt, Cherry Rose, a hand-appliqued and hand-quilted piece.

The show will be open Friday from noon-7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Admission will be $3, $2 for those over 62 and free for children 12 and under.
