Lakeland Student Caught With Gun

From Staff And Wire Reports

Rathdrum police were called to Lakeland High School Tuesday morning after a student brought a gun to school.

The small-caliber, semiautomatic handgun was found in a classroom among a 16-year-old student’s belongings, said Lt. Alex Carrington.

The 16-year-old student had shown the gun to another student off the school grounds, before classes started, said Principal Chuck Kinsey. The second student reported what he’d seen to police.

Officers went to the school where they found the gun unloaded, although a shell was nearby, Kinsey said.

The student may face criminal charges, Carrington said. The student was not arrested but was released into the custody of his parents.

Any student caught with a weapon at school faces immediate suspension, according to school policy. The student also faces expulsion for at least a year, Kinsey said. “The staff at Lakeland High School is committed to providing a safe and appropriate education environment and we’ll do everything possible to maintain that climate,” he said. , DataTimes
