Arthur Mccartan, Former Dean At WSU, Dies At 75

Memorial Mass for Arthur E. McCartan, former longtime dean of students at Washington State University, will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Olympia.

Mr.McCartan died Saturday. He was 75.

He was born in Butte, Mont. He attended Carroll College in Helena from 1939 to 1942 and left school to serve in the Air Force during World War II. He completed his bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology at the University of Montana in 1947.

He enrolled at WSU in 1947 to earn a master’s degree in clinical psychology. He served as a counseling assistant in the resident halls and in the dean of students’ office while working on his degree. He started his full-time career at WSU in 1949.

He served as dean of students until he retired in 1985.

He was the co-founder and chairman of the Whitman County Parks and Recreation Board and served two terms on the technical committee of the State Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation.

In Pullman, he was also involved with Camp Fire programs, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pullman Interfaith Association, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Newman Commission for Eastern Washington.

In 1989, he and his wife, Clarice, moved to Olympia.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Clarice; two daughters, Sheila of Olympia, and Anne Marie of Richmond, Va.; four sons, Richard and Daniel, both of Olympia, Brian of Seattle, and Gregory of New York; one brother, Richard of Spokane; two sisters, Anne of Spokane, and Winifred of Seattle, and six grandchildren.
