Go Cyber Surfing For Your Dinner
What’s to eat tonight?
A cyberdinner, of course!
That’s what Sima Issen’s kids say when they see their mom surfing the Internet, looking for a recipe to fix for the family.
Issen, a physician at the Rockwood Clinic, is an enthusiastic advocate of the Internet for food and fun.
“You can find all sorts of neat things,” says Issen, who recently found some recipes by checking Netscape Navigator’s “What’s New?” section. There she discovered Epicurious Food, which had Bon Appetit and Gourmet magazine recipes.
By using search engines such as Netscape, Yahoo and Alta Vista you can find lots of interesting food sites. Peruse personal computing magazines for more food-related home pages in such categories as alcoholic beverages, candy, coffee and caffeine, cooking, junk food, pizza, restaurants, and vegetarian & health food.
You’ll find lots of CD-ROM programs, too, such as MasterCook’s “Cooking Light.” Never worry about losing a recipe when it’s on the computer. List the ingredients you have on hand and the program will match it up with a recipe. E-mail your favorite recipe to friends. Create a shopping list automatically and get complete nutritional analysis of your meal.
How about a cyberdinner with salmon tonight?
Pan-Grilled Salmon With Mint
From “Cooking Light” (MasterCook’s CD-ROM).
1 cup rice vinegar
4 tablespoons honey
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
4 salmon fillets (1-inch thick)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup fresh mint leaves
Combine the first 3 ingredients in a shallow dish, and stir with a wire whisk. Add fish, turning to coat, and marinate in refrigerator for 10 minutes. Remove the fish from marinade, reserving marinade.
Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium-high heat. Add the fish, skin side down, and cook 5 minutes. Turn fish over; pour reserved marinade over fish, and cook 5 minutes or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Sprinkle with salt and top with mint leaves.
