Tewksbury Pitches Padres Past Expos

Associated Press

National League

Greg Vaughn hit his fifth N.L. homer and 36th overall and Bob Tewksbury allowed just three hits in 7-2/3 shutout innings for his first victory in a month as the San Diego Padres defeated the Montreal Expos 3-0 Tuesday night at San Diego.

Vaughn, who went 2 for 3, broke up a pitchers’ duel between Tewksbury and Rheal Cormier when he drove a 3-0 pitch over the left-field fence with one out in the sixth. Of his nine hits with the Padres, five are homers. He was acquired from Milwaukee on July 31.

Mets 7, Giants 3 San Francisco

Bobby Jones struck out a career-high 10 batters and a rare infielder’s interference call led to four unearned runs in the seventh inning for New York.

Cubs 8, Marlins 1 Chicago

Florida pitcher Mark Hutton walked the first four batters he faced and hit the fifth, helping Chicago to an eight-run first inning and a win.

Pitcher Kevin Foster and Ryne Sandberg each knocked in two runs in the inning as Hutton (1-1) threw only seven strikes in 25 pitches in his five-batter stint.

Phillies 3, Dodgers 1 Los Angeles

Pinch-hitter Ruben Amaro Jr. connected for a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift Philadelphia.

Kevin Stocker doubled past left fielder Todd Hollandsworth and Amaro drove the next pitch from Antonio Osuna (8-5) into the right-field bullpen for his second homer this season. It was only the fourth homer allowed by Osuna in 68-2/3 innings.

Braves 4, Reds 1 Atlanta

Terry Pendleton hit his first home run since returning to the Braves, and Chipper Jones and Ryan Klesko also hit third-inning homers for Atlanta.

Tom Glavine (13-7) allowed five hits in eight innings as the Braves won their fifth straight and eighth in nine games.

Astros 9, Pirates 4 Houston

John Cangelosi tied a career-high with four hits in his first game since a four-game suspension and Donne Wall stopped his four-game losing streak as Houston beat Pittsburgh.

Wall (7-4), backed by an early 7-0 lead, won for the first time since beating San Diego on June 26. He allowed three hits and three runs in seven-plus innings. Xavier Hernandez pitched 1-2/3 scoreless innings for his third save.

Rockies 5, Cards 4 (13) Denver

Dante Bichette hit his second homer of the game in the 13th inning as Colorado rallied.

Brian Jordan gave St. Louis a 4-3 lead with an RBI single in the top half of the inning off Mike Munoz (1-2). But Colorado, back home following a 4-7 road trip, rebounded with its fourth homer of the game.

Clearing the bases

Los Angeles Dodgers executive vice president Fred Claire was quoted by a Los Angeles columnist as saying Bill Russell will manage the team next season. However, Russell said he hasn’t been told anything of the sort. … Atlanta’s Marquis Grissom extended his career-best hitting streak to 24.
