Kimiko Date of Japan used efficient ground strokes and took advantage of poor serving by Argentina’s Gabriela Sabatini for a 6-4, 6-1 quarterfinal victory in the $450,000 Toshiba Tennis Classic at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

Top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain defeated Slovakia’s Katarina Studenikova 6-3, 6-3.

At Toronto, Todd Martin ended fellow American Alex O’Brien’s winning streak at nine matches, beating the Texan 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals of the $2.8 million du Maurier Open. Todd Woodbridge, Marcelo Rios and Wayne Ferreira also won.

Karol Kucera of Slovakia came up with the biggest victory of his career, a 6-4, 6-4 win over topseeded Michael Chang in the quarterfinals of the Waldbaum Hamlet Cup in Commack, N.Y.
