Police Arrest Youths For Car Break-Ins

Police arrested two teenagers and a 10-year-old boy for breaking into cars during hockey games at the Spokane Arena.

The three had more than $1,600 in stolen CDs and stereo equipment when plainclothed officers and a police dog cornered them in the West Central neighborhood.

Joseph Brian, 18, is in the Spokane County jail on a $15,000 bond for malicious mischief and theft charges. The 13-year-old, who was bitten on the arm by the police dog, was booked into a juvenile facility and later released to an adult sister.

The 10-year-old was released to a grandmother after being processed by juvenile authorities.

The arresting officers were part of an anti-car theft team assembled to combat a growing problem of car break-ins. Police did not know if the trio was responsible for earlier thefts.

Officers saw the three youths leaning into a red pickup parked at the corner of Howard and Sinto. When police approached, the three ran to a house in the 700 block of West Augusta.

A police dog bit the 13-year-old boy on the arm when the boy kicked the animal. The boy was treated at Deaconess Medical Center and released.

Man stopped for erratic driving

North Side resident Daniel Lewis told police who stopped him for drunk driving that he didn’t want to go to jail because he couldn’t smoke there.

Lewis, 25, was pulled over by police Saturday night when they saw him driving erratically. Police said he smelled like booze, but he refused a breathilizer test.

When police told Lewis he was going to jail, Lewis said he wouldn’t go because he couldn’t smoke behind bars.

He was booked in the Spokane jail for driving under the influence and resisting arrest.
