Sanford Leads UW To Victory

Mark Sanford scored 24 points and Washington matched its best start since 1985 by holding off a late rally to beat Stanford 74-71 on Thursday night in Seattle.

The Huskies led by 16 points with 7 minutes remaining and by 6 points with 44 seconds left, but Stanford closed to within 72-71 before Donald Watts hit two free throws with 24 seconds left to seal the win.

Dion Cross and Brevin Knight both missed three-pointers that would have tied the game in the final 10 seconds.

Washington (11-4, 4-2 Pac-10) broke a four-game losing streak against the Cardinal.

Stanford (10-5, 4-3) shot just 37 percent from the field.

The Cardinal shot 35 percent from the field in the first half but trailed only 37-29 at halftime with the benefit of 7-of-9 shooting from the foul line.

Todd MacCulloch had 13 points and five blocks for Washington, while Jason Hamilton added 10 points.

Andy Poppink scored 28 points for Stanford and Knight added 11 points.

Ben Davis scored 18 points and Joe McLean added 16 as 13th-ranked Arizona held on for a surprisingly tough 66-59 victory over Oregon State at Corvalis, Ore.

The Wildcats (14-3, 4-2) beat the Beavers (3-12, 1-5) for the 12th straight time and the 23rd time in their last 24 meetings.

The game wasn’t decided until Davis sank two free throws with 11.2 seconds to play.

Rodger Farrington’s layup with three seconds to play gave Arizona State a comeback victory over Oregon at Eugene, Ore.

The Sun Devils (6-8, 1-5) broke a six-game losing streak to earn their first conference win of the season.

The Ducks (9-8, 2-4), who led by as many as 11 points in the first half, lost their fourth straight Pac-10 game.
