Maddux’s Skid Comes To An End

From Wire Reports

National League

Greg Maddux ended a month-long winless drought with a four-hitter over eight innings as Atlanta whipped visiting San Diego 9-3 Monday.

Maddux (6-5), pitching to someone other than catcher Javy Lopez for the first time this season, had two losses and three no decisions since his last victory May 17. He walked none and struck out eight.

Giants 1, Marlins 0

San Francisco

Osvaldo Fernandez gave up two hits in 7-2/3 innings and Barry Bonds hit his 19th home run for San Francisco against Florida.

Losing pitcher Al Leiter (8-6) made just one mistake, a 1-1 fastball that caught too much of the plate to Bonds, who lined it just over the fence in right field in the fourth.

Mets 7, Pirates 6 (10)

Pittsburgh

Lance Johnson homered among his three hits, stole two bases and scored the winning run in the 10th inning as New York blew a six-run lead before rallying.

Astros 5, Reds 4

Houston

Jeff Bagwell hit a game-winning, two-run double in the seventh inning for Houston. Bagwell leads the National League with 67 RBIs.

Expos 5, Rockies 3

Denver

Shane Andrews homered twice and Ugueth Urbina won his fourth straight decision as Montreal ended Colorado’s six-game winning streak.

Dodgers-Cubs, ppd.

Chicago

The game was called after 1-1/3 innings because of heavy rain. It will be made up today as part of a doubleheader.

Clearing the bases

Philadelphia placed infielder Kevin Jordan on the 15-day disabled list with an injured left knee. The injury comes at a tough time for the Phillies, who have won just three of their last 15 games. Starter Mike Grace, catcher Darren Daulton, center fielder Lenny Dykstra and second baseman Mickey Morandini are all on the disabled list.
