Jazz Quartet At Hobart’s
Dave Scott and Tony Malaby are two fine young jazz musicians out of the Los Angeles scene.
They’ll lead their quartet into Hobart’s Jazz Lounge Thursday night. Joining them are Trey Henry, bass, and Billy Mintz, drums. The group specializes in performing original compositions written chiefly as a basis for improvisation.
Scott, who doubles on trumpet and piano, has played with a large chunk of the contemporary L.A. jazz community, most recently with the Kim Richmond/Clay Jenkins Ensemble. He played trumpet on their recent release, “Range.”
Richmond featured Scott as trumpet soloist on his big band CD, “Passages,” and Jenkins used two of his compositions on his latest release, “Give and Gather.”
Scott is a member of the jazz faculty at the University of Southern California, where he coaches combos and teaches improvisation.
In addition to his association with Richmond and Jenkins, Scott has performed with such players as Clark Terry, Gerry Mulligan, Bobby Shew, Gary Foster and Joe LaBarbara.
Malaby has worked with Joe Henderson, The Mingus Dynasty, Joey DeFrancesca and the Village Vanguard Orchestra.
Showtime’s at 8 p.m. and tickets are $3.
