Train Crash Kills Car Occupant

One person was killed Monday when an Amtrak train struck a car near this Pierce County city, the Washington State Patrol said.

The train was en route from Seattle to Eugene, Ore., when the accident occurred just before 6 p.m., said Dan Whitaker, Amtrak’s assistant manager for train operations in Philadelphia.

The person who died was in the car. There were no immediate reports of injuries on the train.

Sumner is about 30 miles south of Seattle.
