UI Women Win At Home Against Ewu

The University of Idaho women’s basketball team defeated Eastern Washington 67-58 on Thursday night before 530 fans in Memorial Gym at Moscow, Idaho.

“We’ll take the win, but we didn’t play very well,” fourth-year Idaho coach Julie Holt said. “I thought Eastern Washington played hard and stayed with it.”

The Vandals (2-5) led the entire game and were up 53-39 with 8:24 left before the Eagles (1-4) began to come back. Two free throws by Tracy Ford pulled EWU to within four points at 62-58, but a free throw and a fast-break lay-in by Idaho’s Kathryn Gussett sealed the Eagles’ fate.

“We kept our composure at the end,” Holt said.

Alli Nieman led Idaho with 18 points and seven rebounds in just 22 minutes. She shot 5 of 15 from the field and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line as well as tallying four steals and two blocked shots.

Holt justified Nieman’s low shooting percentage. “I think she’s trying too hard, trying to do too much,” Holt said. “Once she stops thinking too much and just plays her game she’ll be fine.”

Tracy Ford scored a team-high 16 points for the Eagles and Courtney Horner added 13.

Idaho next hosts Washington State Tuesday.

In Seattle, Jamie Redd scored 24 points and tied a school record with six 3-pointers as the Huskies (4-0) topped the Bobcats (2-3).

Injury may shelve Cash

Idaho men’s basketball player Deon Cash has an elbow injury that might prompt the junior forward to redshirt. Cash, 6-foot-5 from Western Nebraska Junior College, has played in only one game.
