Report Of Spitting Incident At Oregon Grosses Out WSU Coach

From Staff And Wire Reports

Washington State women’s basketball coach Harold Rhodes described it as “about as gross as it can get.”

And, added Rhodes, while discussing Saturday night’s incident in Eugene, Ore., where Washington coach June Daugherty reported she was spit upon by Oregon fans, “If there’s another idiot spitting at me, I’ll tell you what, I’m going to kick some rear.”

The University of Oregon continues to investigate the allegation.

The university is concerned about the complaint, senior associate athletic director Sandy Walton said in a statement released Monday.

Daugherty told the Seattle Times she had complained about the spitting to a security guard at halftime, but nothing changed when she returned to her seat behind the Huskies bench after halftime.

The athletic department plans to contact various season-ticket holders seated in the area to see if anyone has any pertinent information regarding the incident, Walton said.

Daugherty complained about the spitting during postgame interviews after the Ducks had defeated the Huskies 67-60.

Said Rhodes: “As a Cougar fan, I thought Husky fans were the rudest. I guess now Oregon takes the cake.”
