Ewu Rotc Cadets Earn Highest Score At Camp

Three Eastern Washington University ROTC cadets recently received the nation’s highest score at last summer’s Advanced Camp. This is the second consecutive year ROTC cadets attending Eastern have received such honors.

The students are:

Jess Calohan, a 1992 graduate of Medical Lake High School. Calohan graduated in December with a degree in nursing from the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army and will report for duty next June at Fort Sam Houston. He is the son of Robert and Kathleen Calohan, Spokane.

Evan Logan will graduate in June with a degree in chemistry and be commissioned to work in military intelligence at Fort Huachuca in Arizona. Logan, who graduated from a California high school, is the son of William and Kristen Logan, Spokane.

Tracy Wing, a 1991 graduate of West Valley High School, served two years of active duty in the Army before receiving a two-year ROTC scholarship. When he graduates, in about a year, he will be commissioned as a second lieutenant. Wing is the son of Shayne and Shirley Wing, Spokane.

Heather McKell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McKell, Colbert, has been commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Air Force Medical Services Corp. She will be stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota.

Army Spec. Erik Skaggs, with the Washington National Guard, was selected as the 1996 Soldier of the Year for Spokane’s 1st Battalion. He was recognized for his leadership, physical fitness, professional skills and military bearing. He is a political consultant in Spokane and the former district director for U.S. Rep. George Nethercutt.

Christopher Sweeney, a sophomore at Gonzaga University, has been selected as a United Parcel Service Foundation scholar with a $2,750 scholarship. Sweeney, a chemistry major, is one of 10 students in Washington state to receive the scholarship.

Navy Petty Officer Second Class Lyle Harnois, son of Gerald and Charleen Harnois, Oakesdale, Wash., recently received a Letter of Commendation while assigned to the Naval Submarine Support Facility in New London, Groton, Conn.

Harnois was recognized for his superior performance of duty, displaying remarkable dedication and initiative. He is a 1984 graduate of Oakesdale High School.

Air Force Airman Tyrone Gubler, recently graduated from the aerospace ground equipment mechanic apprentice course at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.

He is the son of Susan Gubler, Spokane and Terry Gubler, Las Vegas, Nev.
